They need to get him past 14% to be in the debate;
and, they hope to get a couple of states to go for Hillary instead of Trump, because of a split vote; or, to go to an independent, so that the election can end up in the House.
In the House, each state gets ONE vote. So the result can be foreseen on the basis of who is now in the congress (Dems and Rhinos).

The MSM want to maneuver him into the debates. They figure it will allow them to double- team Trump, give Hillary more time to rest during the debate, and they will try and sell Johnson as a viable choice in the hope of taking votes away from Trump.
