Washington (CNN) Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton start the race to November 8 on essentially even ground, with Trump edging Clinton by a scant two points among likely voters, and the contest sparking sharp divisions along demographic lines in a new CNN/ORC Poll.
Trump tops Clinton 45% to 43% in the new survey, with Libertarian Gary Johnson ...
The new poll finds the two major party candidates provoke large gaps by gender, age, race, education and partisanship. Among those likely to turn out in the fall, both candidates have secured about the same share of their own partisans (92% of Democrats back Clinton, 90% of Republicans are behind Trump) but independents give Trump an edge, 49% say they'd vote for him while just 29% of independent voters back Clinton.
Trump has his largest edge of the campaign as the more honest and trustworthy of the two major candidates (50% say he is more honest and trustworthy vs. just 35% choosing Clinton) and as the stronger leader, 50% to 42%. Clinton continues to be seen as holding the better temperament to serve effectively as president (56% to 36%) and better able to handle the responsibilities of commander in chief (50% to 45%).
On honesty, Clinton's backers express greater skepticism about their candidate than do Trump's supporters. When asked which candidate is more honest and trustworthy, 94% of Trump's backers say he is, while just 70% of those behind Clinton choose her, with 11% saying Trump is more trustworthy and 17% saying neither of them are. And when voters were asked to name the one issue that would be most important to their vote for president, 5% named honesty or trustworthiness as their top choice, ranking it on par with foreign policy and jobs.

Unlike his opponent, Donald Trump is a true New Yorker, born and raised in Queens and still maintains his primary residence here in Manhattan. That counts for a lot with the working classes. Coughing and choking Hillary is just a carpetbagger and a phony baloney New Yorker.
She'll probably still take the city overall but massive turnouts in Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester counties - as well as upstate - should overwhelm the city vote. We do need the turnout but it can be done.
Trump needs to play it cool, as he did in Mexico. Give them hope. Maybe even convince a few to support him.
There will be time enough to attempt arrests and prosecutions after he takes office. When US Marshals are ready break down the door of Goldman Sachs' headquarters, his personal security detail will need to rise above and beyond the call of duty.
That is impressive, thanks for sharing. I bet the police are happy to help provide security for Trump as he supports them.
I agree completely
I’m feeling good about Trumps chances, but some of you need to step away from the crack pipe thinking he can win New York. Obama beat Romney 62% to 36% in NY. Even if 800,000 NY Dems decided not to vote all together, ANOTHER 800,000 or so would have to flip to vote for Trump for him to win. My guess is something along the lines of 55-45 for Hillary in NY.
When Trump was a fraction behind, his campaign was said to be struggling, having setbacks and he needed to drop out. Now that he’s 2 points in the lead, it’s a close race, near even and too hard to call.
Trump doesn’t put on phony southern accents when he’s in the south either like Hillary does. If I was from NY her southern accent would turn me off.
They also poll blue areas like Atlanta.
The cities mess up the whole state in a lot of states. CA is dominates by LA and the bay area, OR by Portland and Eugene, WA by Seattle, OH by Cleveland and Columbus, etc. It gets down to the urbanites vs. The rest of us.
Momentum, anyone? If Hillary lost 13% from one poll to the next, that suggests she may lose even more this week. I’ll cheer if that happens. One thing the polls do is “give permission” to support Trump. MSNBC/CNN/Jeb claim only racists vote Trump, but seeing a majority of Americans in support of freedom will convince even more people that it’s okay to vote Trump, and that may help start a bandwagon.
Also, it’s time for Trump to launch as serious and widespread a campaign as he can, including TV/radio ads and not just the social media he does so well. He has to take and hold the lead while the early voters are sending in their ballots; leading on election day is not enough.
Finally, Trump and all of us need to get out the vote on election day (and watch the polls, and send money to his campaign). If Trump loses, America as a free country will die. We have no buffer, no reserves, no residual protections in what little is left of the Bill of Rights. President Hillary would be the final nail in America’s coffin. We have to go all out and win by far more than the liberal margin of fraud. We have to have so many valid votes for Trump that there aren’t enough dead/fictional/illegal votes to overcome the voice of decent Americans.
Good post. I agree that we all need to get involved in GOTV and voter registration. Last election I made phone calls to a swing state and started with early voting. If anyone says they never vote but like Trump, be sure we get them registered if they haven’t done so.
Depends on where you live. Look here.
Well then we all need to make sure we get those folks registered to vote. I know I’ve seen quite a few of them on media.
