As the October 1 deadline approaches for the us to turn over control of ICANN, the domain name non profit, to the international community, several congressional Republicans are vowing to fight the move because they say it's dangerous and premature.
Politico:
GOP lawmakers have long warned that the administration's plan to relinquish its authority over ICANN, the global nonprofit that manages the internet's domain name system, could give authoritarian countries like China and Russia an opening to make an online power grab. Now, as the actual date of the transition approaches Oct. 1 Republicans are looking at throwing up new obstacles.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is pledging to make the issue his primary focus this month, beginning with a floor speech on Thursday, in which he's expected to rail against the Obama administration's strategy. Cruz has already launched a website claiming the president is giving away the internet," complete with a spinning countdown clock against a black background. And he's scheduled a hearing of the Senate Judiciary oversight subcommittee he chairs next week to investigate the possible dangers of the plan.

PROCON gets it. And too many on this site continue to fight yesterday's battles.
How about reading this as Ted Cruz is the main driver in Congress today standing up against this usurpation of freedom?
It will bite us here, and if it goes through maybe everyone will be able to rail against Ted Cruz over at DU or SOROS.com because this place might no longer be around.
If Trump is smart he will join with Ted on this and make it a point for all those California tech heads who do understand how serious this is and Millennial internet privacy champions who don't know anything about it.
FReegards!
That means hell vote for it, and have a very good sounding (to him) reason.
Since Cruz actually seems to be about the only one trying to do anything at all to stop it, I figured that the new consensus on FR would be that turning control of the internet over to the international community is a great idea.
I don’t believe I said a thing negative about any other senator regarding this issue.
I’m not going to lie to myself about Tead.
Tead spent literally months talking down Corker. He held forums and focus groups. Guess what he did...
Okay, so this minute he’s on our side. LOL
Next minute? Who knows?
Nope, but when Tead champions your cause, just count on losing.
They including uber conservative Saint Cruz couldn’t even defund the baby butchering Planned parenthood!
And be sure to blame Ted instead of blaming Mitch McConnell.
Do I need to address Mitch?
You don’t know about Mitch?
LOL
Just keep ignoring the truth of what Ted was, is, and always will be.
You are so right. We need to hand the democrats 80 or 90 of the 100 senate seats. That will make things SO MUCH BETTER!
They would have to want to first.
Why have they waited til the last minute to oppose this?
How is this not a taking?
Do you even care?
What will you do with no Freerepublic.com; with no Drudgereport.com, with no conservative websites whatsoever?
Snark on..
No. We need to elect better quality more honest and loyal replacements for the bad D’s and gop_e. Electing 90 percent D’s will leave us as bad off as we are now with that many votes ( D and gop-e ) for D policies
They’re only vowing to fight, not actually fighting and putting a stop to it. Same old, same old do nothings.
Right that’s why the Idiot Rep voters in these 2 states brought back Ryan and McCain even though they stab US in the back and there were alternatives to both!
Obama is trying to outdo Jimmy Carter who have away our Panama Canal. And just who runs that canal now? We developed the internet just like we built the canal. His next move will be to give Guantamino back to Cuba, or maybe Hillary can do that if she wins.
I wish sites like TMZ would get on this bandwagon too, before it’s too late. People like JLo, Taylor Swift, Michael Jordan, Brad Pitt, David Geffen the record mogul and Kanye all stand to lose a lot of lucrative business choices if the Globalists get majority control over the net.
The problem I foresee is that these vapid entertainer’s sites won’t be affected, only “trouble sites”, like Freerepublic.com and other similar conservative websites.
