Presidential elections are "strange." We voters do NOT vote for a candidate. We vote for a party elector, and the party elector votes for the candidate. The party can substitute nominee at any time up until the electoral ballots are sent to Congress, including AFTER THE ELECTION.

The appearance of "Clinton/Kaine" and "Trump/Pence" on the ballots is merely a convenience for the voters.

Maybe so but when in our history has a person not on the ballot been made president? Gerald Ford comes to mind but that is the only situation I can think of in which that happened.
