I enjoyed reading the Wikipedia write-up on Nodier. Had not heard of him and found it very interesting.

I will look up Nerval as well. Looking forward to learning

It was in "The Mind of the European Romantics," by H. G. Schenk:

" ... the utmost limit of his [Hoffmann's] achievement ... lay in the genre of the scurrilous, grotesque or macabre novel and short story... It was this part of Hoffmann's oeuvre which had the greatest impact, notably on Edgar Allen Poe, Gogol, and above all in France. When Gérard de Nerval for the first time looked across the Rhine, he burst into the cry: 'Le pays d' Hoffmann!' "

I remembered it because Hoffmann is my favorite German writer.
