The Week 2 Eagles/Bears Monday Night Football game earned an 8.3 overnight rating on ESPN, down 11% from Jets/Colts last year (9.3), down 16% from Eagles/Colts in 2014 (9.9), and the lowest ever for MNF in Week 2 of the season. The previous low was an 8.5 for Washington/Philadelphia in 2007.
The Eagles win, which peaked at a 10.1 from 9:30-9:45 PM ET, was the ninth of the first 13 NFL telecast windows this season to hit a multi-year low in the overnights. That includes all three MNF telecasts.
ESPNs telecast drew a 16.2 rating in Philadelphia and an 11.2 in Chicago. Coverage was simulcast on local independent affiliates in both markets, earning a 13.4 on WPHL in Philadelphia and a 10.9 on WCIU in Chicago. New Orleans was the top neutral market with a 12.9, with Norfolk (12.0) and Denver (11.3) rounding out the top five.
NFL usually scores well against debates. Debates suck, they’re infotainment that lack both information and entertainment. I’d rather watch the worst football game ever... hell I’d rather watch those other countries’ version of football.
Many people like myself are self boycotting the nonsense spouted by overpaid and undereducated children. Only way to get any of this back in line is to cut the funding.
My TiVo recorded the game (basically automatically, I know I can change that), but I have no interest in watching it... Anyone know if that affects their ‘numbers’? The cable company can certainly tell the channel was tuned... Or do they still compute ratings the old fashioned way, with ‘surveys’ (electronic or otherwise)?
just read they are planning a mass protest against the Pledge at of all places.... Soldiers Field (Chicago).
Nice! My family has been cutting back on tv period.
Once you cut the cord you realize you can go on with your life quite happily without the NFL and their endless commercials.
Part of me wonders if not having Tirico in the booth is bringing down ratings. He’s one of the best play-by-play guys in the business.
From what I read ratings have been down across the board. I watched Tirico do the Notre Dame v. Michigan State game on NBC. Him and Flutie are a lot better than the old crew.
NFL
No F***ing Loss.
pretty sure numbers are now generated from the cable or satellite company, no more boxes on your set.
I had a similar question to a contractor friend who was doing TV advertising, and he explained he pays by how many viewers watch the show, I asked how do they know, he said they keep track of everything being broadcast into your home on satellite or cable, and he is billed accordingly.
He also had to pay the actor in his commercial (a retired sports personality) from those same numbers (residuals I think is the term?).
Didn’t some Eagles team members give the black power salute during the National Anthem?
Roger Goodell... Captain of a sinking ship, in which he made the keel cracks.
And this is what happens when you have a professional sport who’s Commissioner offers a 4 game suspension to one of it’s revered hero’s when he happens to have a deflated football (the established punishment for such a violation being a $25,000 fine) and you praise second string players who take a knee during the national anthem.
Good point. I’ve been putting my tv on the Smithsonian channel during football games, even though I wasn’t watching it.
And not just that!
Refusing to stand for the anthem.
Black Power salute.
Promoting BLM.
Hands up don't shoot bull crap from last season.
And from the league...
Failure to in any way try to control this behavior.
Fining players for wearing 9-11 commemorative shoes.
Refusing Dallas' request for a simple patch showing solidarity with the DPD.
It's going to take a whole lot to get me watching again. They can start by firing Roger Goodell.
Can you imagine, “look at that monkey run” being said today?
Not trying to rain on the parade, but a lot of satellite and cable companies now do not offer ESPN HD in their basic package. This is the case with DirecTV in my area. This may account for some of the loss of viewership.
My better half and I talked about TV just last night and neither of us could remember the last time we turned it on.
We will stream movies occasionally, on PC or mobile device, but not live sports events.
I think for me it may have been April, as I do closely watch The Masters every year.
In two of the largest markets in the country.
I don’t care for Flutie in the booth. I don’t think his commentary adds much. One thing missing from today’s announcers is the great voices. I miss Keith Jackson and Pat Summerall announcing games. With the retirement of Verne Lundquist this year, that will only leave Brent Musburger with an easily recognizable voice in the booth.
