he threw an absolute hissy fit; he was lying prone on the road screaming that New Zealanders were assholes and he couldnt wait to get back to Europe, I'm sure plenty of Algerian Muzzies would be only too happy to give this infidel a ride back in France.

I hitch hiked all over NZ easily and quickly. Of course, I didn’t sit by the side of the road waiting for a ride.
I walked energetically alongside the road and when the a car came close, stuck my thumb out. viola !

“Watson estimates the man could have reached Greymouth in a days walk and been halfway down the west coast in four days.”
Watson answered the question I was going to ask, which was, how far could this guy have gotten by walking during the four days instead of waiting around for a ride? He probably could have gotten a ride somewhere along the road the first day. I am assuming that if you are trying to hitchhike, you aren’t carrying a lot of luggage that would keep you from walking.

Punakaiki is only 44km north of the established west coast town of Greymouth.

What was known as the Coast Road runs for 67 miles from Westport in the north down to Greymouth. Punikaiki is about in the middle of the trip. Its a great day trip ...other things to see ...small beaches etc..

44 km to the nearest town. In the U.S. that would only have been 27 miles. It’s another sad victim of the metric system, that’s what.
