It is not a goofy custom of the Swiss. It's just what they do, and have probably done for thousands of years.

Obviously that guy has probably never heard "if you are in Rome, do like the Romans do."

I personally dislike the practice of handshaking based solely on hygiene reasons. However, the Swiss people as a whole are more than likely a very CLEAN people.
