Disney Pulls Controversial ‘Moana’ Costume After Complaints

Disney has pulled its controversial “Moana” costume after consumer complaints.

The outfit, based off of Dwayne Johnson’s character Maui in the film, consists of a brown zip-up suit with tribal tattoos and leaf skirt.

“Your little one will set off on adventures in this Maui costume featuring the demigod’s signature tattoos, rope necklace, and island-style skirt,” the product description read before it was taken down. “Plus, padded arms and legs for mighty stature!” A matching black wig was also for sale.

As we previously reported, some took offense to the costume and accusing Disney of “brownfacing.” One user, who identified as Polynesian tweeted, “Our Brown Skin/Ink’s NOT a costume.”

“The team behind ‘Moana’ has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some,” Disney said in a statement released Wednesday. “We sincerely apologize and are pulling the costume from our website and stores.”

A female costume, consisting of a crop top with “folk art pattern” and skirt with a “Polynesian inspired print” and sarong remains on the Disney Store website.

Disney went to lengths to cast Polynesian actors in the film. Johnson and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, who voices the title character, are of Samoan and Hawaiian descent, respectively.

In the animated tale, Moana teams up with demigod Maui in search of a fabled island.

The film is slated for release on November 23, 2016.

some took offense to the costume...

Well then, don't buy it. See, that was easy.

Oops, sorry. I forgot that we live in a fascist, PC world. Because some took offense to the costume, NO ONE must be able to buy it, look at it, or even think about it.

It's a free country, yes indeed.

Just ten years ago, they would have been pissin’ and moanin’ that Disney wasn’t recognizing their culture. People are idiots. There is no intelligent life on this planet.

Wearing shirts for women is Western.

I insist Polynesian girls walk around topless.

I am crying in a puddle of Tears because these Hawaiian girls wear shirts and brassieres.

I insist they take them off.

As the group Porno for Pyros sang years ago in the song called Pets, "Will there be another race to come along and take over for us? Maybe Martians can do it better than we've done. We'll make great pets."

Sad but true.

Different culture similar problem. My FIL was a Theravada Buddhist learning Pali as its main liturgical language, and studied p its scriptures in the original Pali. Along with that came complex religious tattooing. In the last quarter of his life, he became a devout Christian. With that came a concern with his tattoos — both their religious connotation and the more general Christian prohibition on body marking.

Much of humanity would make horrible pets. Lack of gratitude, unpleasant disposition, biting the hands that feed them.

“Cultural Appropriation” is another one of those pathetic and squishy academic concepts that begin and end in the “institutions of Higher(sic) Learning”, and gain traction there and there alone. Like Micro-aggressions of which it is a part, and “safe spaces”. Eventually all this crap will die on the academic vine, but not soon enough for me.

True. I would make a great pet, though: loyal and utterly delightful.

Ward would have been arrested for child endangerment after they evacuated the neighborhood and raided Cleaver’s home.
