Something that has annoyed me since long before anyone had heard of Obama is FORMER presidents being still being called President Bush, President Carter, President Reagan, etc, after they are out of office. Mr. Kennedy will always be President as he died in office. But current living presidents, governors, senators, should resume being called Mr. or Ms. as they are no longer in office and it is confusing to hear them addressed as if they are still in office. Ms. Clinton is no longer Madam Secretary as she no longer occupies the office. Mr. Bush Sr. & Mr. Bush, Jr. are no longer president, why address them with a formal official address that does not apply to their current position in society. It makes no sense. And for those who say it is a courtesy, it is not, it is elitist. If you add the descriptive former before the title that makes sense, but to continue calling someone something they are no longer makes no sense. Mr. Clinton, Mr. Carter, Mr. Bush, Mr. Bush and any other out of office politician or appointee are now private citizens and should respectfully be addressed as any other citizen is address. It is common courtesy to the rest of us that they resume being addressed the same as us common citizen. Doesn’t it make sense? Isn’t it the American way?
