Miami Marlins Jose Fernandez killed in boating accident

MIAMI, Sept. 25 (UPI) — Miami Marlin’s 24-year-old ace pitcher, Jose Fernandez, was killed early Sunday in a boating accident.

The team confirmed his death in a statement. “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”

The team cancelled Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

ESPN reported that, according to multiple reports, police got a call of a possible boating accident about 3 a.m.

Law enforcement officials found a 30-foot boat that had crashed in to the rocks off Miami Beach and overturned. Three people, including the promising left-hander, were found dead and authorities were looking for survivors.

Fernandez, a star young pitcher who was initially scheduled to start in the Sunday game, had that start pushed back to Monday so Adam Conley, returning from the disabled list, could start.

A Cuban defecter, Fernandez played baseball at a Tampa high school before being drafted as the Marlin’s first-round pick in 2011, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Huge loss to MLB. Fernandez' story is the American Dream at its finest.

As the photo above and more pics on the Miami Herald site show, the jetty area is loaded with channel marker buoys and range markers. If alcohol wasn't a factor, youthful testosterone levels surely were.

Hey there—thanks for your detail about navigating Government Cut and the jetty. Very sad day for baseball fans and Floridians.

Boating at night is doable. It just takes lots of experience. I boated at night for over 20 years here in the Keys. Half of it on the reef the other half in the shallows of Florida Bay. It’s an experience you never forget. It’s some of the best of the best for fishermen and those of us who love the water.
Of course you have to be careful. And, accidents to happen.

Exactly! People her passing judgement on these young men obviously know little about the water or night time navigation which is a whole other game.

You can be on top of the world, and an accident like this can happen. Sad. Put not your faith in wealth or power or fame.

Because there are at least 48 other people who understand the gravity of the incident and are not callous jerks like you!

You are correct. Crews and Steve Olin were decapitated, although living in Cleveland at the time, I don’t recall this being explicitly reported.

The only reason I know this, is that I was in management for the 3rd largest boat dealer in the US, headquartered in Ohio. One of our Sea Ray plants was in that area, then. And one of their delivery drivers worked part time as a paramedic and he had been called to the scene when it happened. He described the whole thing. It was a worse scene than anyone in Cleveland ever knew. If you had walked around NE Ohio that week, you were sure that you were attending a funeral. To this day, I am not certain that they have reported the players were decapitated.

This had been a rarely scheduled day off during spring training...it should have never happened. Olin wanted to welcome his new teammates. After this tragedy, I believe there was never another scheduled day off - ever - while the Tribe had spring training in Florida. Finally, they returned to AZ, where they had been for decades.

When I saw this horrible headline this morning, it brought back that vicious punch to the gut.

You “experienced” outdoor know it alls are obnoxious. Great, you can boat at night. Congratulations. Now, let me pass judgement. You’re missing the point. 23 year olds that pitch for a living probably aren’t fishing at 3 am. But thanks anyway Mr. Hemingway.

Actually, I hope there were no drugs or alcohol involved. And it does appear to be a fishing boat and there is a chance they were fishing. He is in great physical condition and not scheduled to pitch. It is easy to miss a night sleep at 24 and just sitting on a bench.

But before anyone makes him a hero, we should learn the facts. Three people died, not just him. He could be responsible for their silent deaths (media does not care about them, they are non-human since they are not famous).

All comments on all sites only care about his family, not the other families.

There is a lot more to driving a boat than driving a car. And a lot of it isn’t immediately obvious like never shot cut diagonally to an inlet.
