A few years ago the St Louis Cardinals lost a promising young rookie...I forget his name, but I think he was in a motorcycle crash in the Dominican Republic (perhaps that was his home country?). Another very sad case.

And I still remember Thurman Munson (is that right?) the Yankee catcher dying in a plane crash sometime around 1977...sad.

Sad for those who recall I’m sure.

Oscar Tavares was the Cardinal player killed in an auto accident, just days after the 2014 season ended for St. Louis. Like Fernandez, he was expected to be a star for years to come.

Tavares was driving drunk and speeding. The crash killed him and his girlfriend.

Too early to know if alcohol was involved here, but in any case, life is fragile under the best of circumstances. But, we don't often consider the risks of things we do.

Thoughts and prayers for the Fernandez family. He was every thing they say he was and more. A huge loss for the Marlins and Miami.
