Will Republican leaders rubber stamp Obama’s internet giveaway? [Updated With Cartoon]

Congress is ironing out another of its continuing resolutions. Conservatives led by Ted Cruz are insisting that the resolution include language that would block the transition away from U.S. oversight of the Internet’s domain name system. Donald Trump has backed Cruz in this fight.

Why is ongoing U.S. oversight so important? Because, as Rick Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government, says:

Continuing U.S. oversight of the Internet’s domain name system protects the First Amendment rights of everyone who uses the Internet and prevents the creation of a global monopoly that one day could censor the Internet absent U.S. governance.

Sen. Cruz explains that if we hand oversight of the domain name system to an international organization, as President Obama seeks to do, countries like Russia, China, and Iran might be able to censor speech on the Internet, including here in the U.S., by blocking access to sites they don’t like.

These and other authoritarian regimes would love nothing more than to censor the web on a global basis. Unless Congress acts, the Obama administration will significantly improve their prospects for doing so.

Unfortunately, the congressional Republicans may be on the verge of caving. According to Manning, it’s being reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan have surrendered U.S. oversight of the Internet’s domain name system in negotiations with the Democrats to fund the government.

It would be particularly pathetic for Speaker Ryan to cave. As Manning notes, the Obama Administration ignored previous defunds of the internet giveaway. For Ryan now to rubber stamp the giveaway would make a mockery of his his call to restore Article One powers.

Manning warns:

More from the article:

A vote for the continuing resolution is a vote to surrender the Internet to Google, Facebook, China, Russia, the United Nations and who knows who else. We will mourn the day we gave this away, and Republicans will have been the ones who rubber stamped it.

Fortunately, the reported GOP capitulation is not, apparently, a done deal. That’s the good news. The bad news is that time is running short.

For once, the GOP seems to be putting up at least a measure of resistance.

Agreed, according to Duffy’s office, they are trying and Ryan is supportive...on Friday they said things are still fluid...WE HAVE FOUR DAYS...

Hoping some of the keyboard warriers will call/email/tweet their elected representatives to get this voted on and included in the CR.

Hard to take it seriously since they had plenty of time to do something about it and didn't, for the most part. Even if the GOP holds onto both houses, McConnell and Ryan both need to be removed from leadership. They've both been a complete joke.

Of course they will.
50% of them agree with it in principle.
40% of them are good little dhimmis afraid to say NO! to Caliph Barry, although a few of them pretend otherwise for a while, while they campaign for re-election.
Only 10% of them have any convictions that they will actually fight to uphold.

Don’t expect any actual accomplishment from the Waffle House.

They already received their Open Society bonus checks for getting this far anyway. They don't care.

The Congressional Republicans will rubber stamp obama’s internet giveaway just as sure that the sun will rise in the east Tuesday morning. It is what they do.

Why do we feel a need to give away everything we built and invented? Can you spell Panama Canal?

Too many people are confused.

Let’s cut through the lies and make this as simple as ‘ABC’.

That is an excellent question?

Because we are ruled by globalists who wish to share our wealth and equalize all countries?

Like the Panama Canal, we DEVELOPED it, we PAID for it, we should KEEP IT.

Please take time to contact your elected “representatives” in DC today!

Well they stopped this transfer twice before over past few years, so they don’t always do this...Nothing is set in stone.

I believe it will be far more difficult for them to do this if people will take time to call their elected individuals and complain...I don’t think this issue has gotten the media coverage it deserves...

Actually my rep was unaware of the bill—in a very nice personal reply, he said he voted on it last time in 2015 and was concerned about keeping it in US, but said nothing about this year—this was a couple weeks ago, hopefully he is onboard now with new information we sent him...

Please take a few minutes to contact your elected “representatives” to see if we can make a change!

Cruz is leading the fight in the Senate. Trump is publicly supportive of keeping the Internet under US control. Call your members, especially Republican ones, and urge them to support the nominee on this by opposing 0bama’s turnover of the Internet.

Agreed!!

Here is update too

Talked to Cruz and Duffy offices 9/26. McConnell’s tech person was supposed to call back...in meetings 2 hours ago...Cornyn went to voicemail.

Cruz office: Suggested call McConnell! Senate needs to include language form both SB3031 and HR5418 in Continuing Resolution (CR). We need to light a fire~McConnell needs to make this a priority. Senator Cornyn is the Whip and has influence over what is brought to floor. They felt it was ok to contact Ryan too. Make this a priority!!!

Duffy office: They said getting senate bill to contain Protecting Internet Freedom Act language is critical...Much harder for House to move if the Senate does not have the language in the CR.

They believe Ryan is supportive of their efforts...He has supported prohibiting the transfer for past 2.5 years. They believe Democrats should be called in order to bring pressure on Obama to sign a CR with the language as well as our elected Congressional Reps.

Concern: Reason to pressure Dems...There is no guarantee that Obama would not veto the CR (even losing his coveted Zika funding) in order to be able to allow the ICANN and .mil .gov governance to go off shore to China or UN on Oct. 1...So need to pressure Dems—that means Democratic Senators and Pelosi and Reid.

Folks, it is crunch time...Do what you can. Call Email or Tweet the following:

Absolutely—Any and all calls by people will be appreciated by Cruz and Duffy!

I’d love it to get so busy on their phones that they are just doing hash lines to keep track of numbers ;)
