The Colombian plebiscite on whether to move forward with the peace accord reached between the government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia has been rejected by voters.

With 99 percent of the vote in, the "No" won by a narrow margin, with 50.23 percent to 49.76 percent for the "Yes" vote.

The "No" has 6,426,615 votes to 6,365,838 votes for the "Yes."

There was a 63 percent voter abstention, however, which amounted to 22 million of the 35 million eligible voters.

Significant in view of the fact that the pro-FARC government tried to buy and bully a vote for that phone peace accord.

The wording of the measure was clearly propaganda to promote a ‘Yes’ vote.

This would have ended a 50 year plus civil war...makes no sense the whole world has gone mad!

I suspect the No voters want the insurgency crushed rather than accomodated.

“Opponents of the pact believed it was too soft on the FARC rebels by allowing them to re-enter society, form a political party and escape traditional jail sentences.”

Colombian acquaintances said they simply didn’t believe FARC intended to keep the bargain; they felt they were buying time to re-group.

Yup. And it didn’t require FARC to turn over any of its money, weapons or drugs. And it gave amnesty to people who in clear cases committed war crimes on villagers.

I’m sure the Cubans are disappointed.

The guerrillas want a “constituent assembly” which they assume they’ll be able to control.

Better to finish wiping them out.

Low voter turnout on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Impacted by hurricane. Solid yes areas, no strongest in interior where fighting has occurred.

Apparently, you are unaware of the negotiated terms of agreement.

Copy and paste into Google translate if you choose to realize the situation from a citizen of Colombia...
