Justin Ross Harris simply forgot his son was in the car.
That's what defense attorney Maddox Kilgore hopes jurors will believe as they weigh the evidence in the first-degree murder case against Harris, with trial proceedings that begin today in the coastal Georgia town of Brunswick.
Harris, 35, is on trial for the first-degree murder of his son, who died from hyperthermia while locked inside the family SUV in June 2014 in Marietta, Georgia.
The high profile case looked like a tragic accident. But investigators subsequently said they found Harris had researched child deaths inside vehicles before his son perished.
'Evidence will show this was the worst imaginable death for a child,' Cobb County assistant district attorney Chuck Boring told the jury during opening statements Monday.

I remember reading a Michael Connelly story about just such a thing. The kid’s death was just like what this guy did. Premeditated. I wonder if he also read that story. In the story the guy researched car heat deaths just like this guy did.
Whether these incidents are an accident, I do not believe matters.
A person must still be held accountable for the loss of life. Yes, I know they are hurting, but they are responsible, and a serious failure occurred.
However, in this case, it seems like this was planned, and if that is proven to be the case, this man should be executed IMO, and they can do it by putting him in a hot car. Let him learn how it feels first hand.
What a monster! I wish he would get the death penalty and they would tie him in the back seat of a black vehicle and park it in the full sun in the middle of August. Let him feel what he did to that poor child.
Think I am going to cry now.
Some people are just sick!
The DA probably should have assigned a more dynamic prosecutor.
I think the Clinton standard on intent will be enough to get him off.
If he did,in fact, research the subject that points to a deliberate act.I wonder if there was any life insurance on the child.Or was there a custody battle?
Almost all the accidental cases of this sort could have been prevented if the parent had just placed something of importance in the back seat: a purse, a cell phone, anything that means a lot to them.
Because obviously the child didn’t.
There are homicides where I believe the perpetrator should be put to death in the same manner as the person they killed. This would be one of those times.
“Harris had researched child deaths inside vehicles before his son perished.”
Good Lord and then some. Needs to be tried as first degree murder. Who in the hell researches something like this
You know I think humans are de-evolving.
Not wanting to keep species going.
How many times has some one looking at their phone walked out in front out of your car without looking if your car was even there.
Voting for Shillary. Nuff said.
Good to see the public’s outrage over the brutality of tenth-trimester abortions.
This is almost certainly premeditated murder. He conducted internet searches on child car deaths before this happened. He had breakfast at a restaurant with his son the morning before “forgetting” that he left his son in the sun-baked car.
The death penalty is the only just sentence for someone who would do something so evil.
As goolish as this may be, it is being streamed on Youtube..... It’s awful, but I can’t look away.
Correction: Not streamed, but posted minutes or hours later.
I wish this monster could be drawn and quartered - and I’m serious.
Changed venues twice. He is a pos. I hope the jury does the right thing
I'd settle for hogtied and locked in a vehicle on a blazing hot day.
He was busy sexton get with teen agents while his son boiled to death
