Musical 'Aida' cancelled at Bristol University amid race row over 'cultural appropriation'
UK Telegraph ^ | October 4, 2016 | Sam Dean and Tom Morgan

It is a story of war between two nations, the conflict of love rivals and the looming fate of death.

But the antagonistic themes of Aida seem to have spilled into the wings after a student production of the musical Aida was cancelled amid a row over suggestions of “cultural appropriation”.

A theatre at the University of Bristol said yesterday it had cancelled all showings after a revolt by students.

I once produced a show at the Edinburgh festival for a friend of mine - a well-known British character actor. His beautiful speech about Desdemona falling in love with him - despite his color - was unforgettable. One of the highlights of working in theater.

I love this crap! No more than one black basketball player on the floor per team during a game period, end of story.

Oh, good line of thought.

How about the formidable Jessye Norman playing Cassandra in Berlioz’s Les Troyens? She’s remarkable.

(And sort of a non-sequitur...but not really....but I am a HUGE fan of Hamilton, and I think it’s not only acceptable that much of the cast is not lily white...I think it’s a great artistic choice, and it is visually powerful even though they original cast was chosen b/c of their pipes, not their skin color.....incidentally, the Chicago Hamilton cast is all white...except for Aaron Burr who is black! Now if that’s not politically incorrect in an Othello sort of way, I don’t know what is! But the point being: let’s do art. Not politics. Let’s forget all of this cultural appropriation nonsense and enjoy the art. Can we?)

Then black women should no longer be allowed to straighten their hair.

Thanks to his cousin, Marvin Berry.

How fortunate that you got to produce the play with a good cast! Yes, I love that entire scene. One thing I like about it is how all the Venetians seem to be supporting Brabantio’s complaint against the man who “stole” his daughter. Then they find out that the man is Othello. After the speech to which you alluded, they start saying things like “I think this tale would win my daughter, too”. They may actually be swayed by the beautiful speech, or maybe they are more concerned with not offending Othello, whose military prowess they are counting on for the campaign against then Turks. I like the ambiguity of the Venetians’ motives in that scene.

Cultural differences. Modern Americans call all Caucasions white (or used to - white and black are social catagories that change over time). The English of the time didn’t and had various groups of Caucasions defined as “black”. Othello was a Moor aka a Berber.

I’m sorry, no, it wasn’t the entire play. It was actually a one-man show based on John Guilgud’s Shakespearean show “The Ages of Man.” So it was all excerpts of Shakespeare. Very well done by my friend.

ut I am a HUGE fan of Hamilton, and I think it’s not only acceptable that much of the cast is not lily white...

I have mixed feelings about people of different races "crossing over". I am an opera fan, and am used to seeing black singers in traditionally "white" roles, and this does not concern me. Opera is not quite "real", and if can accept a 200 lb soprano or tenor as a romantic lead, we can accept a black singer in a traditionally white role. Where I have a problem is if race is a factor in the opera, such as Aida, Porgy and Bess, Otello, then it would not be proper to cross races.

The other area where I have a problem is historical personages. I don't care to see a play or opera or film about white people being played by black people. I would not care to see Alexander Hamilton or any other founding father played by black people any more than I would care to see Frederick Douglass played by a white actor. However, I would probably cut the musical Hamilton some slack as it is a hip-hop show anyway, and I don't consider hip-hop to be music so I don't much care about it.

To be fair, they have shown a lot of self restraint in appropriating our culture...

- They don’t work
- they don’t study
- they don’t have two parent families
- they don’t start businesses
- they don’t invent anything
- they don’t speak English

If all the non-whites were serious about cultural appropriation, they would stop using electricity and driving cars.

Blacks in GB are threatening physical harm because whites are practicing "cultural appropriation." Based on a theatrical play written by a white man.
Perhaps whites should have rioted in the US based on the same grievance. Jefferson?

Racism and educational cultural perversion...
Racists if WHITES do; racists if Whites don't.

Expose some American Africans to higher education, and the best they can do to advance themseves and human civilization and culture is to learn big words and invent imbecilic absurdities like "cultural appropriation," "safe places," a Universal and permanent grievance industry, thugball and filthy rap.

I for one have had it.

Let's just the rest of the world chip in, build a fence around all of Africa, and leave them alone to conclude their lemmings-like drive to self-extinction.

The black lives that matter embrace useful education (grievance industries don't qualify,) assimilate, are non-criminally self-sufficient and never adopt and demand the impossible, primitive, animalistic attitude, "Give me respect, or I'll KILL you.

All of the foregoing also applies to Koranimals, but I don't feel like repeating all that over again.

The list of things invented by White people is almost endless. So any non-whites using any of that stuff is guilty of “Cultural Appropriation”. That includes language, modern sanitation, most of modern medicine, the idea of individual freedom and liberty.

Feel free to add to the list then shame the “Cultural Appropriation” crowd with it.

Oh yeah, welfare freebies.

And white bands can no longer play music written by blacks or white singers sing songs written by blacks. Just to be fair you know.

My next karioke session I'll do some Ray Charles, juet to pi$$ off a liberal.

And guys like Fats Domino...would have been eventually wound up playing small clubs for chump change.

Once the white kids found out that certain music would be unacceptable to their parents,, the script was written and there was no turning back!
