Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

Thanx. Matthew is almost parallel with Ft. Lauderdale and it looks like the eye will be at least 50 miles away. On it’s current track, it looks to get no closer than about 30 miles to West Palm Beach. Keep in mind that we are on the “weak” side of the hurricane.

As a truss manufacturer in lower Alabama for 25 years, we shipped many systems into Florida. Over the years, the state’s standards improved greatly and inspections became incredibly strict. IIRC, trusses for beachfront properties had to be engineered to withstand 150 or 160 mph winds. I pray their diligence helps save homes.

Last year when I was doing an exterior remodel (in Colorado) and deciding what kind of material to be used for the soffits I did a web search on the topic and found a paper from the University of Florida. It mentioned the improvements that have been made in Florida construction techniques and said that soffits are one area that (at the time) had room for improvement. They said that when storm winds blow, if a house has metal or vinyl soffits, this will be the first point of failure. So I opted for stuccoed soffits, which had their highest wind rating. (We don't get hurricanes or tornadoes here; but we get thunderstorm outflow winds and downbursts that can be impressive.)

Not entirely true. Even a 80 mph tornado is carrying a debris field with it. And 80 mph moving in a circle has a shearing or twisting effect, plus an updraft. I live in tornado alley, come on down!

We are lucky to have Rick Scott he’s one of the best governors we have had in some years.He will do all in his power to keep Floridians safe I have no doubt.

I’m doing good. Moved to Louisiana about 4 years ago and went through Hurricane Isaac. That was bad not so much for the wind but because of how slow-moving—practically stationery for awhile. It really caused massive flooding. My street got hit pretty bad but I’m further down the road and away from the ditch and swamp. Lucked out for sure. Relay my good wishes to your friends—I’ve got the entire state in my prayers and I’m sure a great many others are doing the same.
