COMMENTARY: Why Pence's debate win just might matter
CBS News ^ | October 5, 2016 | Will Rahn

Let’s get the easy, obvious point out of the way first: Mike Pence won that debate, and won it handily. Does it matter? Well, I’ll get to how it might in a moment. But let’s first talk about why and how Pence won.

Pence is of course a successful politician, but he’s never really been seen as – how to put this – well, he’s never been seen as one of the sharpest minds the GOP has in its roster. He’s not a guy you associate with intellectual depth, like Paul Ryan, or having new ideas on where to take the party, like Jeff Sessions.

On Tuesday, though, he at least seemed studied, well-versed, polished. He knew his stuff, and appeared at ease talking about it. That’s an accomplishment for a guy who’s not really all that experienced when it comes to tight races and high-profile debates, which just adds to the sting of Tim Kaine’s loss....

I agree. My opinion of him went up two-fold.

When the top of each ticket is so roundly disliked, the natural course is to see who is 2nd on each ticket. Pence came across well, Kaine.. ehhh came across like a flaming jerk. This can only help Trump and hurt Hillary.

Of course it matters. Do you think Hillary is going to live through the winter? A vote for Hillary is a vote for Kaine.

Like Paul Ryan??????

Did I miss something. Paul Ryan is supposed to be the new standard in political brilliance?

Give me a break. Pence is 10X Paul Ryan.

I think Pence demonstrated that Trump knows how to surround himself with good and competent people.

Those of us who backed Cruz or Walker in the early going should see a lot to like in Pence. Unlike Cruz, he has government executive experience, and he also has media experience. He’s at a good age. He knows Congress. He’s from a sane part of the country, and he was born in a U.S. state of two U.S. citizen parents. He also had the good grace to turn his superior performance into promotion of the Top of the ticket, where it all matters.

Pence’s slection made me move from, “Okay, Trump.” to “OK! Trump!”

Pence really laid it on KGB Putin. He certainly ‘gets’ his evil nature and larger agenda in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He’s exactly the sort of guy Trump needed as his VP.

Thats a great point. I always tell people that Presidents really only do two things.. They make Decisions, and to help them do that, they appoint people around them to help them. Trumps first "appointment" looks real good compared to Hillary's right now.

HilLIARy being as seriously ill as she is,
her choice of a VP is SUPER-IMPORTANT

so yes, the VP debate was very very important in this election particularly.

(and her VP guy looked VERY BAD in that “debate”..constantly interrupting and making a fool of hisself)

The elephant in the room is that both presidential candidates are getting on in years.

It's very possible that VPOTUS could end up POTUS before end of term.

Does America really want Kaine?

He reminded me somewhat of President Reagan during the debate and I worked for him.

Pence won the election for Trump. Trump no longer stands alone in people’s minds - and neither does Hillary.

It got a LOT of people off the fence.

Enough, I think.

He’s not a guy you associate with intellectual depth, like ...

Clinton or Gore or the Mook or Megyn or Syd or....

Knew his stuff, and comfortable in his own skin. Has the demeanor presence and self=confidence of someone who was a really good high-school athlete.

If Paul Ryan has “intellectual depth” it must be another kind of intellectual depth, one that has nothing to do with his mind or his brain.

I disagree with this author, whoever he is. I’ve had the highest regard
For Pense and his intellect, communication skills and conservatism for many years. I always thought he would make an excellent Speaker. Much more than Ryan. What a stupid conjecture.

I also think the next town hall style format really advantages
extemporaneous Trump over bobblehead granny. And, with a real journalist Chris Wallace moderating the final debate, here’s hoping the VP night is where his campaign hits the gas and doesn’t look back.

Damning with faint praise.....they just cannot stand it when Republicans show true depth of character and intelligence.

“... He’s not a guy you associate with intellectual depth...”

Name for me someone in the rat party who you associate with intellectual depth?

The democrat party leadership is filled to the brim with imbeciles. Obama, Biden, Clinton, Pelosi, Boxer, Franken to name a few and everyone in the black caucus.

They act like they have so many intellectual giants and instead are all morons.
