USS Mesa Verde Steams Toward Haiti in Response to Hurricane Matthew

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The San Antonio-class amphibious transport docking ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) steamed toward Haiti Oct. 7 to support Joint Task Force Matthew, which is overseeing U.S. military relief efforts on the island nation.

U.S. Southern Command established Joint Task Force Matthew to oversee U.S. military relief efforts in Haiti. The task force is supporting U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) following a request for U.S. assistance from the government of Haiti.

The addition of Mesa Verde brings amphibious, command and control, medium and heavy lift and road clearing capabilities suited for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.

The 700 Sailors and Marines embarked aboard Mesa Verde also bring ship-to-shore expertise, the ability to make and transport fresh water, medical capabilities at sea and ashore, and many vital skills suited to helping after a hurricane.

The Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Two, Rear Adm. Roy I. Kitchener said, "Some of the same capabilities that make amphibious Navy ships like Mesa Verde so effective in combat operations also makes them ideal to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. We're here to do all we can on behalf of the United States people."

Mesa Verde has a large well deck designed to flood with water which allows Landing Craft Utility vehicles the ability to transport large loads from a sea-based platform to a fouled coastline. This amphibious capability is unique to only a few types of Navy ships.

Few things bring as much hope as seeing a US Navy ship show up on the scene of a tragedy. Politicians have always disappointed. Kudos to this generation that serve and make things happen, despite the politicians.

Kudos, indeed.

Guessing Hellary’s aid check isn’t aboard.

Where’s all the money, the aid the Clinton Foundation is in arrears to the people of Haiti? There’s a bunch of money intended for the Haitian people out there somewhere to be found. The Clinton’s and their cronies should all be Haiti in shackles, and chains clearing the roads with picks, and shovels.

Oh my gosh. As we speak. There is absolutely no shame in these thieves . What happened to Roger Clinton’s gold mine in Haiti? These slime buckets really need a jail cell.

What they help make happen is the utter dependence of a people on the magnificent US Federal Government. Without taking away from this ship’s mission and their people, we continue to enfeeble the Haitian people and empower their tyrants and kleptocracy.

Now if this ship was landing some Marines who where there to institute martial law and the rule of law for a decade or so, think MacArthur, it would be worthy event.

I’m sure Roger Clinton will donate some of the millions he and the Clinton foundation has made off the gold mines in Haiti.

I crack me up.

You betcha!

Army armored cavalry transported aboard USS Ogden (LPD 5), landed on the beaches of the Batangan Peninsula RVN, FEB 69.

We were told it would be tough, but when we got there, the Marines had already landed.

(’Did get considerably rougher though as we moved in. But we could easily have won that war.)

does anybody find it odd that the DR, on the other side of the island, is NEVER MENTIONED? EVER??

why are they not devastated as bad or worse since they are on the windward side of the island???

all the RATS must think Haiti is a island unto itself

Operation Bold Mariner, right? I was with 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines. We placed a cordon across the northern end on the peninsula in January, along with 2/26 and a brigade (IIRC) from Americal Div. or 1st Air Cav.

I ended up being a tunnel rat there. We cleared two separate complexes, each over 3,000 feet long (at least, we strung over 3,000 feet of Det Cord in each, linking the Comp B Cratering Charges we used to blow them.)

I came crawling out one day to find spit-shined boots, starched, creased jungle utilities, a white head of hair and three stars on each shoulder. Gen Stillwell!

Operation Bold Mariner, yes. Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club (RIP) told me that name a few years ago, as he was out there in a destroyer at the time.

Nasty place then. But quite beautiful and serene today. Went back with daughter in 2000. A little closer perhaps. Though still in that galaxy far, far away....

Welcome Home!

I think that was tried in the 1920s. It didn’t work then & it won’t work now. Eventually the USG through the USMC gave up installed a local strong man (Who became Papa Doc!) and sailed away. Nation building is not new, history clearly shows it can only work if there a strong but adaptable culture & civilization (Think Germany & Japan!) present to act as a foundation. Neither Haiti or the Middle East has those.
