I was surprised to learn that of all the European immigrants to the US, there are more from Germany than any other European country.

That German immigration was a big issue during the Revolutionary War - and the primary reason why we don’t have a national language. So many German colonists helped Washington, and he knew they’d be alienated with English as the national language.
