That was attributed to Fleet Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto, although there is no written record of his having said precisely those words. Yamamoto studied at Harvard and was naval attaché in Washington for to postings so he was well aware of American culture and the reluctance to be involved in foreign wars. But if provoked the US response was always swift and decisive (back then).

Thank you!
Yes, our culture has changed. Liberty bonds, victory gardens, rationing. “Rosie the Riviter”, blackouts and aircraft watchmen. People scrimped and sacrificed to win the war.
During WWII, my dad, as a ten year old boy, would run downstairs every morning to get the newspaper to see what the news from the front was.

Just before the attack Hirohito signaled acceptance of the inevitability of war with the U.S. in a haiku,
“If all men are brethren, then why are the winds and the waves restless?”
Back on topic, the 2005 Trump tape was intended for release just before Election Day (28 days!). Not only did the Dems jump the gun but they did so on the eve of a long Federal weekend, dulling its impact and which will have long dissipated by Nov. 8th. Trump will survive and win.
