House Speaker Paul Ryan appeared to take a principled stand when he distanced himself from Donald Trump. But he has infuriated Mr. Trump and his supporters, and that could hurt other GOP candidates.
WASHINGTON When House Speaker Paul Ryan told fellow House Republicans that he would no longer campaign with or defend GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, he may have felt it was the obvious, principled position to take.
Speaker Ryan is a straight-shooting family man and devout Roman Catholic, and after the release of a lewd 2005 video showing Mr. Trump bragging about sexually aggressive treatment of women, Ryan said he was disgusted.
Ryans goal in distancing himself from Trump, he told House GOP lawmakers on a conference call Monday, was to focus on saving the GOP majority in the House, potentially imperiled by Trumps decline in polls. But Ryans new posture may already have backfired. Some fellow GOP House members are furious. And national party chairman Reince Priebus pointedly has not abandoned Trump, pledging to keep spending party money on the nominees campaign.
Ryan appears only to have empowered Trump. The voluble billionaire, after all, clawed his way to the nomination by bucking the party establishment and Ryan, as speaker, is as establishment as it gets. Now Trump boasts of feeling liberated.

Anybody know how to contact this p**y?
I have been getting junk mail from the jerk which I throw away.
I’d like to send him something online to tell him to stop sending me this crap and I’ll never donate to the GOP again as long as he’s the Speaker of the House.
Piece of Sh(t.
Ryan is a sold-out buffoon.
What happened to the Christian Science Monitor?
Someone needs to remind lying Ryan one of the first targets those “Refugees” Moose limb crazies he just funded to be shipped into this country, go after are the Christians.
If that's all there is the GOOPee is on the ropes fur shure.
Just this week this pricipaled Ryan-o refused to impeach the IRS commish. Ryan doesn’t say boo when Obama exceeds powers with exec orders.
He is a toothless Pussy, and a disloyal puke punk coward.
This writer is an idiot. There was nothing principled about Ryan’s actions. He backstabbing traitorous POS.
Call Congress...tell your Republican Rep. in the House...
to get Paul Ryan out of the Speaker position or you will vote against every Republican in the House..
I’m not going to support SCHUSTER IN PA. HE IS ANOTHER PROFESSIONAL POLITICIAN WHO HAS TWO SIDES TO HIM...ONE PERSONAL AND ONE PUBLIC...
EVERY VOTER IN HIS DISTRICT SHOULD CHECK INTO HIS HISTORY, A BIT UGLY...DO A SEARCH...THEN VOTE...
That's my thinking. This is about money.
Trump signaled he wasn't going to participate in some little under-the-covers deal Ryan's got going.
I think many - if not most - House members are double dealing and guilty as sin.
How else do they all leave as multi-millionaires?
Convincing voters to split their vote go Republican for Senate, even if voting other-than-Trump for president is extremely difficult, especially in this partisan era of politics.
Split-ticket voting beyond 10 percent statewide is literally a myth, says OConnell.

Voting for Donald Trump and not voting for McCain and McSally is going to be very easy. They have no idea how easy this is going to be.
A lot of these Republicans are probably saying to themselves: “If we were just going to sell out anyway, we may as well have left the weepy drunk in that Speaker’s position.”
Time to bring up term limits again.
Those without sin, throw the first stone.
Jesus forgave the prostitute because she had a contrite heart. Not throwing stones, but I see nothing contrite with or about Ryan.
Oh and another thing. It is difficult for many men to admit they are wrong, far less openly apologize. Trump did both; I see a much gentler heart in Trump than I do in anyone else of the GOP. Ryan you are Catholic, but does Christ even know you.
Ryan had never campaigned with Trump or even mentioned him much, until Trump was invited to speak last Saturday in Wisconsin.
The story broke the night before giving the pure Ryan opportunity to castigate @ Trump and disavow
Very fishy
But the whole point is, it was NOT a “principled stand.”
It was opportunistic, cynical and most-likely, pre-arranged in the most devious way.
It makes Ryan look like the good guy and Trump the bad guy.
At the end of the article the author states it is Trump who is willing to destroy the Party!
A very misleading headline!
