Donald Trump threatens to sue New York Times over sexual harassment report

High-ranking sources within the Trump campaign had told CNNMoney that they were "drafting" lawsuits against both the Times and The Palm Beach Post ...

When Times reporter Megan Twohey interviewed Trump by phone on Tuesday night, "he threatened to sue us if we published these allegations," Twohey told CNNMoney. She quoted Trump as saying that "none of this ever took place" and calling her "a disgusting human being." Twohey also received a legal letter from a Trump attorney on Wednesday afternoon.

One high-ranking source within the campaign had similarly told CNNMoney that "NYT editors, reporters, politically motivated accusers better lawyer up."

Unlike Machado and the Billy Bush recording, which were based on truth, Trump has to follow through with these suits, or else his denial will be cast as false. The law moves slow, and all he has to do is file, with the suit containing the denial. The accusers have at least a month to answer, and by then the election will be over.

This is "one of those things" where there is good argument to not sue because it creates a distraction from the election campaign, and good argument that not pushing back, hard, against false accusations, encourages false accusers. And in this case, Trump's threat is as public as the accusation. He drew a red line, as it were.

I’ve never raped anyone. Yes, I’ve probably “leered” at some, (don’t know what that means). I never groped or felt up a stranger on a plane. So, if someone at my work were passing these rumors around that I was, I would go all out against them.

Trump is not a Joe Biden dirty old man type. He never raped anyone. His girlfriends out there speak highly. PLUS!!!!

Some of us here know that the man, all his life, has been a germaphobe. Who has his mates get blood tests before having a sexual relationship.

I doubt you’ll fine that TRump had prostitutes.

Doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, no drugs. Good looking, tall and successful. I doubt that he had women on the side. He didn’t need to.

I should have checked the Trump website first!

Trump Campaign Statement

"This entire article is fiction, and for the New York Times to launch a completely false, coordinated character assassination against Mr. Trump on a topic like this is dangerous. To reach back decades in an attempt to smear Mr. Trump trivializes sexual assault, and it sets a new low for where the media is willing to go in its efforts to determine this election.

"It is absurd to think that one of the most recognizable business leaders on the planet with a strong record of empowering women in his companies would do the things alleged in this story, and for this to only become public decades later in the final month of a campaign for president should say it all.

"Further, the Times story buries the pro-Clinton financial and social media activity on behalf of Hillary Clinton's candidacy, reinforcing that this truly is nothing more than a political attack. This is a sad day for the Times." - Jason Miller, Senior Communications Advisor

Camp Crooked is reacting already, with 1 am tweets.

Trump's lawyer's letter is meaningless. Baquet will line his birdcage with it.

Jennifer Rubin and others "pile on," such bravado!

@brianefallon it is the most inept retraction letter I've ever seen. Where is suggestion of recklessness??
