Very good post, though I feel certain that Nixon was absolutely not the first President to “weaponize” the IRS, but was the first one the press decided to go after with everything it had because they detested him so thoroughly.

As for your last line in your post, I don’t think you are speaking only for yourself there, I think there are a lot of like-minded people on that view, including myself.

It may be a pipe dream to hope they miscalculated, but hey...it’s a dream.

If Trump gave a similar speech, the media would gang up and accuse him of trying to control the media. Since they aren’t doing that with regard to Obama’s speech, they must figure that Obama’s threat is aimed at someone else, e.g., independent web sites like this.

" . . . now on to shutting down the forums and blogs."

Every once in a while, when I attempt to go to FR, I get a message that says something like, "We couldn't connect you to that website." Whenever that happens (presumably, at this time, for innocent reasons), it occurs to me that someday the government (or tech companies allied to the government) might just decide to permanently prevent access to certain sites that they deem "hateful" or "offensive" or "untrustworthy."

To me, it is a very real possibility. Based on what I see in Europe already, and comments from progressives on web sites, I would say that RIGHT NOW about 20-30% of the population would shut down this site (and other conservative sites) in a heartbeat if they had the power to do it.

"Then Watergate happened, and all of that changed. Democrat Presidents were given passes while Republican Presidents had their feet held to the fire."

I agree that Watergate was a pivot point in the history of American journalism.

Since Watergate, it seems that the dream of every young journalist is to topple a Republican president.

Meanwhile, as you say, they circle the wagons around Democrats. The Watergate generation is now nearing retirement, and the new generation of journalists is even worse. They - unlike their elders - were raised on a diet of post-modernism and de-constructionism, which assail the idea of objective truth, preferring to view all communication, all news, all literature, all media, as expressions of power relationships.

Hence, the PURPOSE of journalism is now seen to be one of taking sides, pushing agendas, and become a PLAYER, an activist. Objective truth, fairness, reality? That's all for suckers.

The Watergate generation is now nearing retirement, and the new generation of journalists are even worse.

Because many of them were schooled by those from the Watergate generation now nearing retirement, I would venture to conclude.

On top of that generations have now been brainwashed, through their entire educational experience. That educational experience has taught them the following:

Democrat controlled governments are good, while Republican controlled governments are bad.

Democrats do more for the ordinary citizens, while the Republicans only look after their wealthy overlords.

Wealthy Democrat overlords are generous, while Republican wealthy overlords are stingy, evil, racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homosexual hating people.

Since they have never really been taught to think for themselves, they are incapable of seeing reality even when reporting on it.

At least that is what I believe at any rate, right or wrong!!!

There is an interesting parallel point here: Obama is also saying that people are not bright enough to figure out what is true, partially true, etc., in a landscape filled with many sources of information.

It is true that one can be overwhelmed by more information than they can process or have time to process. And goofy conspiracy or doomsday theories often take up “space” that would be better devoted to more likely threats. (The last couple weeks I’ve been asking friends & neighbors if they know what a Carrington Event is. A “sun burp” such as that is definitely a serious concern, but few know what it is, or how often they occur.)

Still, for the most part, given many and diverse sources of information, most free people CAN eventually figure things out. Current distrust of the media, and of government, are two obvious examples. Obama and his ilk do NOT want the people to have this power, but they cannot publicly say that. So, instead, they in their unwitting arrogance, insult us as being stupid and needing guidance. Their guidance, of course.

Obama REALLY unhappy that there are no longer only 3 alphabet networks and a couple of newspapers that could be controlled by the elite to disseminate the “proper” information to the peasantry. It’s pretty much the same anguished cry by the elite back in the day regarding the Gutenberg press.

A little more of the ole wink’n’nod. I’m sure 0 called them and told them, “I’m gonna have to rip your @$$ publicly, you know I don’t mean it, it’s that time again to sow some confusion. Believe me, we’re all good.”

“Code talk for shutting down conservative speech on the internet. They are most of the way there with the ICANN giveaway and Facebook and Twitter censoring conservatives, now on to shutting down the forums and blogs.”

Exactly. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but I’m thinking we have to brush up on our ham/satellite radio skills, etc.

“While some see only the positives, no more wars,”

_________________________________________________________

Excellent post.

I just don’t see war to end anytime soon. It’s a nice hope, though..

As long as there are scarce resources...I wish I knew why people went to war, but perhaps some other more intelligent FReepers can chime in....

______________________________________________

And as for your statement: “the reality that power corrupts and absolute power absolutely corrupts. “

______________________________________________

So very true! And at some point, the people get fed up and revolt. Hey, just thought of another cause for war! The desire for liberty.

Obama: “America’s “wild, wild west”

______________________________________________________

Given his background, he would have no idea or understanding about one of the most interesting periods of American history.

I wish I had lived back then, although life was certainly more difficult, without all the conveniences. Plus, as a woman, I’d be washing clothes, the house, making food, tending to children, etc., all day. :) (although I did give up a law career to do just that, LOL! but it was a lot easier).

Guns made it a polite society. People didn’t just shoot each other for nothing. And women kept “the great equalizer” under their skirts.

No, “proscribe” is the word you want because you are saying that Islam does not forbid telling lies, right?

That total sissy in the Oval Office couldn’t last 1 day in the Wild West.

He cannot drive a truck....

He cannot negotiate gravel/ dirt roads-—or snow.....

He cannot buck a bale of hay...

He cannot doctor a cow in the chute....

He cannot castrate a young bull....

He cannot brand a calf.....

He cannot saddle a horse.....

He cannot hunt for meat for the freezer.....

He cannot feed the chickens or gather the eggs...

He cannot clean out the stock trailer.....

But he VERY good at shoveling S___ to the American people...!!

I live where women can do more wild west work than that pansy. AND—they do all the cooking & cleaning.....

He has spoken very few truthitudes and a lot of falsities during his lifetime.

What he really means is the media used to keep people ignorant. Now there’s too much truthin’ goin’ on out deah.
