Man claims son was eaten by fellow inmates during riot in Venezuelan prison

Juan Carlos Herrera is beyond devastated. He says his 25-year-old-son, jailed in 2015 for robbery, was beaten, dismembered and eaten by fellow inmates at the Táchira Detention Center. The shocking claim became public on Oct. 10, when Herrera told the local media he made the gruesome discovery during a regular prison visit. He explained the alleged atrocity occurred during a month-long mutiny that had ended three days earlier.

“One of those who were with him when he was murdered saw everything that happened,” Herrera told reporters. “My son and two others were taken by 40 people, stabbed, hanged to bleed, and then Dorancel butchered them to feed all detainees,” he added, referring to infamous inmate Dorancel “people-eater” Vargas, who is in prison since 1999 for cannibalism.

It's about money, of course. What is it with people saying crazy things on this thread?

Walked through San Pedro prison in La Paz 30 years ago. I had head from other’s that had visited that there were a couple Americans there. It brought them some stuff. Turned out that although I had never heard of them, they were from the same area I was from. They had known Klaus Barbie (a butcher of Leon infamy ) there. THey had tried smuggling and got caught. One had money and paid the judge a couple K. He received 3 yrs. The other didn’t and got 6 for the same charge.

They gave me a tour of the grounds and cell blocks. San Pedro was very spartan and nearly unsurvivable without access to money to the point that you bought your room. It was a city inside the prison with people bringing in stuff for prisoners to sell. A very large group of homos ran a wood shop and sold furniture to people outside the prison.

Prisoners really ran the asylum.

You have to wonder just what they are teaching about world history and geography these days these days.

Well, part of current instruction is the dogma that “illegal immigrant” is a “race,” so you’ve got to think the fascinating variety of both pre-contact and contemporary Latin America is of no interest at all.

You have a point.

And you can partly blame popular culture for some of it. They are too lazy to crack a book so when they need a tribe they make them either Aztec or Maya.

They have had them as far north as North Dakota and as far south as Peru.

Well, what did you think? It doesn’t cost Fox News or any other news organization very much to run a section of their website devoted to news of interest to Hispanics, and it allows them to target advertising toward those potential viewers.

The Inca get attention when someone wants to show views of Machu Picchu or llamas. They’re really the only indigenous South American group to cross the North American radar.

Speaking of geography, I was surprised to find that Caracas is more than 2,000 miles from Mexico City. Central America is bigger than I’d realized.

I stand accused and guilty of all charges! I am now dressed in Orange. I picked the wrong tribal culture to illustrate my point. What can I say, but that Junior High was over 50 years ago, and occasionally, facts will slip through the sieves of time.

It’s Friday.

LOL! Good point.

You could have just said Venezuelans are descended from the Spanish. They're a pop-culture icon for their evil atrocities, the Spanish Inquisition and all that.

We had a Diocesan Spanish Music Get-Together on Saturday, and the Other Guy in my church’s Spanish music program played a song he had written. His name is Geovanny. The Cuban priest from Miami (running the thing) asked if he were un hermano Italiano? No? Hermano Mexicano? No? Colombiano? No. He’s from Guatemala.

That’s what I meant to say! That’s the ticket. It was on the tip of my tongue.
One need only view the news shows for Univison and see how much bloodier the telecasts are. There is something endemic in the Spanish culture in that hemisphere that rationalizes or accepts this type of warfare.

It is generally agreed that Spanish colonialism correlates with a bloody mess. It is disputed whether this is due to something about the Spanish, or to the pre-colonization circumstances. One could recall the sources of Spanish culture: Goths and North African Moslems.
