NFL ratings plunge could spell doom for traditional TV
Washington Post ^ | October 14, 2016 | Drew Harwell and Rick Maese

Football, America’s biggest prime-time powerhouse, has been thrust into a crisis this fall, with dwindling ratings sparking questions over whether it can remain a gold mine for television in an age when more Americans are abandoning traditional TV.

Network executives have long used the National Football League’s live games as a last line of defense against the rapid growth of “cord-cutting” and on-demand viewing upending the industry.

But now, the NFL is seeing its ratings tumble in the same way that the Olympics, awards shows and other live events have, falling more than 10 percent for the first five weeks of the season compared with the first five weeks of last season. A continued slide, executives say, could pose an even bigger danger: If football can’t survive the new age of TV, what can?

The Government has used the NFL’s Anti-Trust Exemption in order to bully them into becoming SJWs.

While the football fans were vegetating with their TVs, their country was being washed-out from under them.

Insulting the people providing your revenue and then hiding your head in the sand about why they are no longer customers will only increase the death spiral.

Ask J.C. Penney and Target.

The reason everyone is turning to Netflix or turning to their own collection of show and films, rather than watching network TV, and I’m sure everyone on Free Republic already knows the answer to this, is that we are tired of being lied to by the media, watching shows and movies where our beliefs and values denigrated and mocked, and being exposed to every kind of perversion and moral filth.

Was a stunningly ignorant and disloyal statement. Keeping talking Kapersuck. The ratings are plunging.

Government has been using TV to program children and low thinking adults since its inception. I don’t think they are going to quit just because viewership has dropped in the sports arena.

The NFL only became even more popular when fruity celebration dances and chest slapping displays became the norm, and players couldn’t self-police themselves to stop that dog squeeze.

There is a reason for that. Look around at the state of popular culture. The modern version of the NFL is custom made for it. It would actually be shocking if the NFL wasn’t the most popular US pro sport by far.

Also, I have gotten all of my news from freerepublic exclusively since the invasion of Grenada. Thanks, Jim

The invasion of Grenada was in 1983. Did Free Republic exist then? Did the internet as we know it exist then? Just asking......

As long as the NFL doubles down on STUPID, the fans will continue to desert it. Fools like Colin Kapernick think they can insult fans with their behavior and continue to rake in millions for playing a game. Sorry dumb ass. You and these other idiot jockstraps will find out where your bloated salaries derive — fans and TV. Less viewers and less fans in the stands and you've got a real problem. The longer the NFL stays in denial, the worse it gets.

Target stock price peaked this year on April 19 at 83.98. Closed today at 68.11. That’s an 18.9% drop.

...traditional television and the NFL are never going to be what they were again....

Traditional network alphabet news has become so biased, I quit watching that. Their ratings must be going into the tank too.
