Like most Americans, but unlike most of the other 434 members of the House of Representatives, Andy Harris pulls a lengthy commute to work each day.
One way and without traffic, the Maryland Republican says he can go door to door in an hour and a half from his home in Cockeysville to his office on Capitol Hill. But if he hits traffic, it takes almost three hours just to get to work.
Harris doesnt mind. As a physician, he says hes used to long hours in the operating room and, as a single father, the 60-mile trek is necessary for him to get home to his 16-year-old son. Plus it gives him time to think.
And while doubling back on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway daily in his Buick or Jeep, Harris says, he believes he diagnosed the predominant ill ailing the House GOP conference: conservative infighting. He also prescribed a solution: himself.
Harris, 59, is challenging Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., for the chairmanship of the largest conservative caucus in Congress, the Republican Study Committee.
Examining the 114th Congress in its waning days, the Maryland doctor argues that strained relations between the RSC and the smaller Freedom Caucusthe two predominant factions that together make up the majority of the Republican conferencedid harm to the conservative movement.
Lack of unity among conservatives has made it very difficult to be effective in steering leadership in the rightward direction, Harris told The Daily Signal.
Harris, the only Republican in Marylands congressional delegation, notes that the two GOP caucuses often take similar policy positions but adopt different and sometimes counterproductive strategies. He points to policy fights over spending levels and a stopgap spending bill as examples.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Is he better than the current leadership?
Dr. Harris is my congressman, in the northeastern Baltimore suburbs and he also represents the entire eastern shore of Maryland. Crazy gerrymandering. He is the only current GOP representative in the eight Maryland districts.
He is a decent, honorable man, no hint of scandal. Good reputation in a district fraught with a history of scandals.
He supported fellow physician, Ben Carson, originally.
Hasn’t exactly endorsed Trump but has recently cut a generic commercial, calling on Marylanders to MAGA.
Again, he is a good man, and will likely do a fine job.
Don’t expect anything bold, just competence.
I think I’d take the train to Union Station. A little slower with no traffic, but faster if there is a traffic jam at Baltimore or WDC. Lets you out a short walk from the Capitol.
Go, Andy!
I hate the term single father or mother. It implies divorce or out of wedlock. ie; single by choice. In his case, his wife died a year or so ago. ie; no choice.
I thought he was my congressman and thanked him one day when we met. Then he told me to go look at the map closer. His district wraps around my city thanks to crazy Gerrymandering.
Puke on a map, draw outlines around the vomit and call those Congressional districts.
nice to see he doesn’t fly in or “require” other such perks to get to the office like pelosi and others.
Andy Harris is an honorable man and my congressman.
Go Andy!
