Sexting underage minors across state lines is a federal crime. FBI has always been investigating this.

The feds would become involved because Weiner was in NY and the 15-year old girl was in NC.
I'm sure the Anthony Weiner "sexting" case started with the NYPD and New York City's child protective services department, so they were probably aware of the evidence even before the FBI was.
Here's the thing, too ... I suspect the senior people in the Trump campaign knew about all this even before Comey did.
My theory is the perv deleted his emails, pictures, and everything else that might incriminate him. But deleting can be reversed by sophisticated investigators. They should have smashed the laptop with a hammer like Hillary's blackberries. In any case when an investigator is looking for deleted data he cannot distinguish between what belongs to which party.
