As was stated in an earlier reply to your post, NYPD has many who hold security clearances. And these devices are evidence in a crime the NYPD and DA take very very seriously. Sexual abuse of a minor and possibly possession and distribution of child porn. For the Feebs to demand handover of these devices would require a court order, and even that would be appealed. Remember even though DeBlasio is a Red the Manhattan DA has almost a century old reputation of not allowing politics to interfere with criminal prosecution. In the last 80 years Manhattan DA’s office has had only four bosses, Tom Dewey, Frank Hogan, Bob Morgenthau and Cy Vance Jr.
As yet no custody hearing has been scheduled in Federal Court and I doubt Obama and Lynch will go the FISA route.
I am sure the Huma Weiner marriage was a total sham. I’m actually surprised they had a kid. I don’t think Huma is into that kid much, either.

Last week I was saying we do need divine intervention.
I wasn’t expecting The Almighty to send help in the form of a Weiner.
Hillary and Bill know how to compromise people. They start our with ‘small’ favors and work their way up to real bribes. No one takes the first $10,000 offered... they accept ‘a book’ with no real value - or a ‘kindness’ to one of their kids.
Members of the press have been slowly seduced to being on the take the same way. The Clintons know the dark ways...
The problem is that the sex crimes unit in NYPD is not the same as the counterterrorism unit in NYPD. The latter has the security clearances, but they are not the ones working the Weiner case.
Second, if there are top secret and SAP data as there was in the other Hillary emails, then even the security clearances held by the NYPD counterterror unit would not suffice.
If the sex crimes unit of the NYPD has to surrender the laptop because they do not have security clearances to handle the info, I doubt that they would surrender it to the NYPD counterterror unit which is not working the case and has no reason to work the case, rather than to the FBI team with the advanced security clearances that has already been formed to handle the other Hillary emails.
Unfortunately, that FBI team under Comey has been running a whitewash investigation. But even so, I don’t see how the NYPD counterterror unit gets involved in this at all.
They can refuse to surrender without a Federal Court Order. That will require DoJ to obtain one in open federal court and maintain, publicly, that there may be classified info on the computer. That admission is the ballgame.
