OK, this sets up an interesting question.

It may be that Carlos Danger owns the laptop. But, who owns the data on the laptop?

Perhaps the fine legal minds here on FR can provide some insight...

Depends. If the emails came from state department, regardless of classification, they belong to the government

Not a fine legal mind but am assuming that if you upload or backup your files to SOMEONE ELSES DEVICE, it would be like giving it to them. So it is theirs. Only exception is if the property is stolen and if the recipient had a way to assume it was stolen. (Like a fence would, or anyone receiving multiple stolen items over time.)

PubliusMM :" It may be that Carlos Danger owns the laptop. But, who owns the data on the laptop?"

Weiner owns the laptop
The data, if it contains Secretary of State business, is owned by the FED.gov
The data could have been transferred by synch application
with, or without permission from Huma,
which would also explain why listed under "Life Insurance", #Corruption.
This would also indicate why,
if you like your privacy, you should NEVER SYNCH your devices.
