The U.S. government believes hackers from Russia or elsewhere may try to undermine next week's presidential election and is mounting an unprecedented effort to counter their cyber meddling, American officials told NBC News.
The effort is being coordinated by the White House and the Department of Homeland Security, but reaches across the government to include the CIA, the National Security Agency and other elements of the Defense Department, current and former officials say.
Russia has been warned that any effort to manipulate the actual voting or vote counting would be viewed as a serious breach, intelligence officials say.
"The Russians are in an offensive mode and [the U.S. is] working on strategies to respond to that, and at the highest levels," said Michael McFaul, the U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014.
Officials are alert for any attempts to create Election Day chaos, and say steps are being taken to prepare for worst-case scenarios, including a cyber-attack that shuts down part of the power grid or the internet.
But what is more likely, multiple U.S. officials say, is a lower-level effort by hackers from Russia or elsewhere to peddle misinformation by manipulating Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms.

Surely this government would not shut down the internet to preclude the distribution of potentially fatally damaging information at the last minute.

What the will do is SAY they have taken aggressive action to stop attempts by Russians to elect Trump, and this is the explanation for Hillary’s landslide election numbers that were not shown in all the pre-election polls.
As Trump so often says, it’s all rigged.
Even a Trump landslide will be totally hidden, and a Hillary win is in the books already.
Just happened to have NBC Nightly on the tube as I was making dinner and I had to laugh as this story was used as NBC’s deflection of the Hillary corruption mess. Talk about transparency; they’re so transparent it’s comical.

Barry needs to control the internet on election day so that he can protect us from Trump’s henchman Putin and ensure that there are not millions of fraudulent votes from non-citizens.

If anyone is going to cause issues, it is out own country. Easy to blame another country because many will fall for it.
They are most certainly up to no good. If Trump is way ahead they will use the Russian excuse to try and nullify the election.
Who trusts the White House?
The government will bring down the Internet on Election Day. This is how they will be doing the steal. Been predicting it to family for a while to be prepared. I hope Trumps people are. Also count on cell communications and possibly the electrical grid. Nope, don’t put anything beyond tyrants trying to avoid prison.
