The checkpoint was on a DRIVEWAY, not a road.

A checkpoint on private property is not a stupid thing at all. Plenty of places have checkpoints.
Also, if the militia men were not doing anything wrong (which is indicated by the fact that they were not arrested or cited for anything) then the sheriff’s deputies who threatened them at gunpoint for a lawful activity were themselves the only criminals on scene.
