Every indication is that Putin saw Trump as the lesser of two evils. One of Putin’s biggest threats is Islamic terrorism. Clinton is unreliable on that.

Check the record. On multiple occasions Put disagreed with Hillary on Islamic terrorists where Putin went hard line and Clinton waffled all over the place. I never heard Trump waffle.

As always the NYS is saying what they think should be the truth. For such people there is no objective reality so they cannot lie. Something is necessarily true because they say it and for no other reason.
