Communes in Switzerland are political subdivisions like counties in the United States. It’s also true in Italy and other countries.

Switzerland is divided into Cantons which are roughly states which are further redivided into Districts (counties) and then communes - but in the US we don't use that term in the same way - which is why I said community.
Municipality is another way to refer to them. It refers to the “city” level of government (with surrounding areas). County is a bad example as a county contains several cities / villages / communities.

Windisch is a village in the county of Brugg in the state of Aargau in the country of Switzerland. And quite picturesque!
