Kellyanne Conway on Prospect of Romney as Secretary of State: 'I'm a Concerned Citizen'
Townhall.com ^ | November 28, 2016 | Leah Barkoukis

Making the rounds on the Sunday news shows, Kellyanne Conway said she has concerns about Mitt Romney as secretary of state, but added that if that’s who President-elect Trump chooses, she will support his decision “1,000 percent.”

“I’m a concerned citizen,” she told NBC’s Chuck Todd when asked if she was “campaigning against Mitt Romney as secretary of state.”

Conway assured Todd she was not “campaigning” against the former GOP nominee and wasn’t trying to “make the news.”

“People feel betrayed to think that Gov. Romney, who went out of his way to question the character and the intellect and the integrity of Donald Trump now our president-elect would be given the most significant cabinet post of all,” she said. “That’s a decision that one man can make, President-Elect Trump. I will respect it. And I will support it 1,000%. But I’m reflecting what the grassroots are saying. They feel — they feel a bit betrayed to think you can get a Romney back in there after everything he did. We don’t know if he voted for Donald Trump. He and his consultants were nothing but awful to Donald Trump for a year."

Conway later said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that she’s a big proponent of party unity but that doesn’t mean “we have to pay for that with the secretary of state position.”

“Trump is also completely guileless and cannot carry a grudge as far as the end of the driveway.”

I 100% completely disagree with this statement in every way.

You will learn over the next 4 years how wrong you are in this statement.

People need to calm down and trust Trump.

Let Trump pick who he wants.

After watching some of the comments yesterday and so far this morning coming out of the GOPe juxtaposition to Conway's, I am of the opinion that the yuge push for Romney is coming exclusively from the RNC, the US Chambers of Commerce, and other mega donors, the so-called "Leaders in the House and Senate" and yes, introduced by Reince Pribus, to "heal the rift" between Trump and the "never Trumpers" but more importantly "We the People!"

Trump now stands in the middle between them and us!

After some discussion with some like-minded people inside the beltway and around the country last weekend, we were told that we must continue the fight, as its only just begun!

In some meetings, we were told, that Trump, his loyalists and appointees must continue to hear the voices of those who didn't support the likes of a McCain, a Romney, a Lindsey Graham, a Paul Ryan et al, must demand that their voices MUST be silenced and and drowned out for the sake of his and our programs going forth and get our voices heard, LOUD and CLEAR inside the swamp!!!

While I can't prove it, I strongly believe Conway is speaking for Trump as his cheerleader and we must follow her lead and pick up the banner and tell the "never Trumpers" we didn't elect Mitt Romney in 2012 and we reject him now!

Sounds like she is paying attention to us. I hope Trump pays attention to her.

So if he chooses Mitt Romney are you going to throw a temper tantrum like a three year old, or act like the adult that you are and respect his decision?

Say it KellyAnne
If the uniparty gets romney as their Secretary of State they and the MSM will build him up as an alternative president and challenge and drain Trumps authority

What romney says and does will headline the news for the next 4 years as if he was really running the government

And having seen Romney’s isolation, self delusional, unbalanced belief in some kind of destiny and overall ego , and his contempt Trump,( and the American people who voted fir Trump) we can assume Romney will buy into and even revel all of this attention as if they really did coronate him

Why oh why is this even being entertained by trump??????

They [respected] Hillary, because they thought that she was going to be president.

This statement made me think that perhaps Romney's desire for the SOS position is the same as Hillary's--a launching pad for running again for President (against Trump).

I stand with KellyAnne & Newt on this one!!! Romney was a weak deadbeat POTUS candidate, as John McCain was, when he ran for POTUS against failed POTUS, Obama in 2012. Romney handed the election to Obama, when he played weak sister throughout the campaign and let CNNs, Candy Crowley dump all over him during the final POTUS debate!!! I would not let Mitt Romney take out our garbage!!! I should state that in my heart of hearts, I believe that, DJT will not end up choosing Mitt Romney to be his Secretary of State!!! Romney should be chosen to wash dishes in the White House Kitchen, IMHO!!!

“He’s not a fighter.”

True. As another poster noted, he couldn’t even handle Candy Crowley.

“She’s a smart girl. ... Trump needs to listen to her.”

I think she and DJT are completely coordinated on this and it’s some type of theater. Not sure why I think that, but I do. They’ve been through too much together, and loyal to each other. If he truly were angry she’d be gone, as this has been going on for a week now.

One of three possible scenarios here:

  1. Conway is acting with Trump's authorization. He gives his team the lattitude to speak openly, even publicly and she's giving her opinion.
  2. Conway is acting on Trump's behalf in some strategy playing out where she is playing a devil's advocate role for Trump. Then Trump will either name Romney (and look strong for choosing him in the face of such pushback from even his top advisors) OR not name Romney after letting his team do the dirty work of trashing him publicly and staying above the fray.
  3. Conway is rogue, going against Trump and playing it in the media.
  4. Conway has some history with Mitt that leaves her so angry that she doesn't care about the consequences and wants to torpedo him any way possible. This is really a special case of scenario 3.

Personally I can't believe it's scenario 1 or 3. Trump may let his team speak their minds without fear of repercussions (but if he does, he needs to cut that out) but I don't see Conway doing it. She's been a loyal soldier throughout, except she did seem to disappear for a few days after the Access Hollywood tape came out. But even if she struggled with that, she never said it in public. That leaves Scenarios 2 (Trump is playing the media and Romney) or 4 (Conway has a deep, personal hate for Romney and even concern of hurting the boss aren't important.

Her comments don't seem venomous, or spiteful. I think it's likely Scenario 2. Trump is playing everyone and Conway is playing a role.

I agree with your take.

There's nothing in DJT's behavior throughout his campaign and in the aftermath of his election that would suggest he'd let a subordinate make the rounds of Sunday shows voicing opinions that were not his own without consequence.

Silence so far from President-elect Trump.

Till I hear Trump say otherwise, I believe he told Kellyanne to say these things. Trump is humiliating Mittens as well he should.

.... he had a war on his hands and he needed fighters who would fight.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Romney couldn’t stand up to Candy Crowley so to me, he’s not a fighter nor did he prove to be one in the latter weeks of that campaign. The disappointment of Mr. Milquetoast in that debate/campaign is still a bitter pill with me. That being said, if Trump chooses him, I won’t like it at all, but I’m willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt. He’s outwitted and outplayed everyone (media, politicians, etc.) over the last year and a half so he’s earned my support and patience as he works his plan to MAGA.

That’s not really necessary. We’re both longtime Freepers We can agree to disagree for our own different reasons. Can’t read tone throught the ‘net. We’re on the same team.

Conway was on Newt’s campaign staff in the 2012 primary. She’s been anti-Romney for a long time.

Trump publically endorsed Romney before the 5th state voted in the 2012 primary.
