For Secretary of State: John Bolton
Washington Times ^ | Dec 01, 2016 | Cal Thomas

Posted on 11/30/2016 10:04:31 PM PST by george76

How about someone with experience as a diplomat, including within the State Department and as a former U.N. ambassador?

John Bolton, now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a regular commentator on cable news, does not engage in wishful thinking, or project American morals on those who don't share them in the vain hope they might be contagious. Here is Bolton on the threat of radical Islamic terrorism: "When you have a regime that would be happier in the afterlife than in this life, this is not a regime that is subject to classic theories of deterrence."

In his book "Surrendering is Not an Option: Defending America at the United Nations," Bolton is unrelenting in his criticism of the toothless UN and of many U.S. policies that have not produced results in America's best interests -- precisely the attitude of President-elect Trump, who wants to look out for America and its interests first. In this pursuit he is not unlike one of his predecessors, Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, who said, "What takes place in the Security Council more closely resembles a mugging than either a political debate or an effort at problem-solving." It is a mugging, and too often it is the United States and Israel who get mugged.

Here's another Bolton quote: "Negotiation is not a policy. It's a technique. It's something you use when it's to your advantage, and something that you don't use when it's not to your advantage." That is the opposite of wishful thinking.

We the People, the millions that voted, trust Trump, we trust Rudy. We trust that both patriots will put America first.

We KNOW that for Romney, everything is personal. He was personally insulted by Trump, he was speaking on behalf of the Bush family that were personally offended by Trump. Romney was so personally offended ( mostly jealous), he was so personally offended that he made it his mission to spend his time, his speeches etc, to bash Trump. Romney didn’t take up band width to bash Hillary Clinton. No, instead Romney had key note speaking engagements with the topic of bashing Trump. Romney supported and probably ushered in a 3rd party candidate in Utah in hopes of derailing Trumps win.

Over and over again everything points to Romneys personal vendetta against Trump. And just a few weeks ago, Romney didn’t even vote for Trump in the general election. In fact Romney was hoping the 3rd party candidate in Utah would be enough to cause h Clinton to win Utah. That is how diabolical and vindictive Romney is against Trump and against We the People. Romney’s ego is severally bruised, and he is only sucking up to Trump for 2 reasons:

To become SoS which is the creme de la creme international hollywood assignment. Just watch. If Romney gets SoS, Romney will be front and center with all the magazine spreads and publicity. Which he is seeking.

The by product of sucking up to Trump and getting named 4 in line to the Presidency is the covertly he hopes Trump fails just like Colin Powell had no problem with GWB failing.

It is so obvious what Romney’s motives are, hopefully Trumps family isn’t buying into Romney’s lies and are not persuading Trump to make Romney SoS.

Bolton met with Pence yesterday. Will meet with Trump on Friday. So after Friday we'll be ready for twitter and the media on Sunday. Excellent....

I think Trump wants Romney in a different position than SOS...maybe something to do with money. Just don't know....maybe Trump just looking for input????

And where has Mr. Kerry disappeared to?? Hope he froze his a** off in the artic.

I really don’t believe Trump will choose Romney. He’s making it so Romney cannot bash his presidency with any credibility.
He’s done with Romney now IMHO

The left would go absolutely insaner than ever. That’s good enough reason to give it to Bolton for me.

I'll offer a big "Hell NO!" on this one.

We've been down this road before, and my strenuous objections are all posted here:

Putting a big-government globalist and paid shill for foreign interests in this role would be a disaster.

Bolton would be my first choice.

Mine too. He has as much foreign affairs experience as all those together that are currently being considered for Sec. of State. A sharp guy that will command respect on the world scene.

If State wasn’t a liberal basket case and didn’t need to be cleaned out, Romney running it wouldn’t really matter. Romney doesn’t have the spine to clean the place out and State needs a good cleaning before we have a properly working Department. I’m not a big fan of Bolton but he knows how the place works and he will get rid of State people who choose not to work for the Trump Administration.

I have no idea why Romney is even being considered...

Because Romney likely would get approved by the committee with the least amount of drama, which right now is what you want. If I could snap my fingers and get my way, it would play out like this: Romney gets approved in committee and confirmed by the full Senate. Trump directs him to select Bolton as Undersecretary. Once his administration is fully in place and functioning with approval ratings in 60's, he fires Romney and appoints Bolton as interim SOS who will hold the title until after the 2018 midterms. Then you bring you bring him up for confirmation as SOS.

The last thing Trump needs to do is to allow his Cabinet selections - or anything else he does - to generate a never-ending string of Breaking News stories. The only issue that needs to suck up all the oxygen in the room is the Obamacare repeal. Let that be the only thing that generates all the media frenzy and occupy their attention. Everything else that Trump does needs to be very low key with the minimum amount of drama so as not to put at risk the possibility of a 62-seat filibuster-proof Senate majority after the 2018 midterms. The Dems are panicked over having to defend 23 Senate seats with 10 being in states just won by Trump. He needs to tread lightly for the next 2 years so as not to adversely impact that possible outcome.

There are a very few men in 'politics' who have impressed me every time I've seen them speak, with their forthrightness and plain, sober talk. Two of them are Dick Cheney and John Bolton.

I was very surprised when a recent thread on FR produced such a backlash against Bolton. Glad to see this one is more positive. I think he would be a fabulous choice as Trump's Sec of State.

Sarah Palin would be great. I would love to see her speaking abroad on a non-apology tour of the world.

My family was prepared to vote for her for President and we did vote for her as Vice President. Are those two positions less than as Secretary of State?

Bolton always gets short shrift here but he’s smart, tough and I know he has America’s interest first.

I'm one of Bolton's loudest opponents here on FR.

I think he's a smart guy, and I'd consider him honest to the extent I can even judge that.

I also know he has spent much of his career inside the Beltway working for people, organizations and governments whose interests are at odds with this country's interests. For that reason I believe he is too compromised to serve in any administration.

Anyone here will tell you that I'm no fan of Mitt Romney, but his lack of any track record in this regard actually makes him a better option, in my mind.

Bolton for SOS.

Rudy for DHS.

Mitt for going away. What, exactly does he bring to the Table?
