Good line. Wit aside, some folks tend to forget why Mary and Joseph went there: They had to register for a new tax by reporting to the authorities in the city where the husband's family came from. Which in St. Joseph's case was Jerusalem, since he was a descendant of King David. You could say Jesus was the very opposite of an anchor baby. He was coming home.

They were there for the feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot).

A celebration at the time Mesiach was to be born.

The census (not a tax) was done at that time because that was when everyone had to be in Jerusalem at that time (Romans weren’t totally stupid).
