Jack Kemp was HUD Secretary with zero construction experience. He was a congressman and retired NFL quarterback.

HUD is not in the construction business.

We don’t need to be constructing more public housing, we need to get people off the dole and into apartments or other cheap housing they can pay for.

He’s a Trump loyalist who checks the “black” box as a member of the cabinet.

And he won’t be out constructing anything. Trump may well have some good underlings to send his way if he really wants to shake up the agency.

I am glad that Ben is taking the post.

“Housing and Urban Development” has nothing to do with actual construction. Mostly, their mission (subject to creep, which has gotten us to where we now are) is to provide “safe, sound and sanitary” housing for the persons who cannot provide for the planning and development necessary in their lives to become highly productive citizens, and undertake the burden of actual home ownership. It is a mindset that has been encouraged and even forced in urban regions, contributing to the rot and corruption of municipalities, and general decline of neighborhoods most affected by this source of largesse.

Dr Carson’s mission would be to educate and encourage the reversal of this trend, showing people they CAN leave the projects and find a true upward trajectory in life.

It’s an executive position. Certainly someone with a doctorate can handle that.

Having grown up in the failed projects, he already knows from experience what doesn’t work.

It’s a corrupt agency, from what I’ve seen, seemingly a way for poorly-maintained properties to be supported by the Feds with rules favoring their total decline while the owner gets paid as long as he dances to the Federal tune.

Carson is honest. That in itself may go a long ways. The people living in HUD housing in rural areas, from what I’ve observed, are vulnerable, unprepared for the most part to take responsibility. Carson may or may not be capable of turning the Agency around. Good staff will help a lot.

Housing and urban development would be better run by taking things away. Like a surgeon might do.

If he had urban, inner city experience then judging by most urban areas he would likely be the wrong man. Trump can provide him with builders. He is there to see clearly and chase out corruption.

He has brains, he cares and he will put a kindly face and demeanor on Trump's agenda - so many here so tired of winning that they can't stop whining.

I like it. Dr. Carson is a role model who rose from the inner city to the heights of excellence before there was such a thing as Affirmative Action. He'll have insight into the quality of life issues for thriving in that tough environment. The construction issues? Do you seriously think anyone but DJT will have final say there?

It is an executive position in which he will take advice, make informed decisions, and delegate effectively to meet the expectations of the man giving him his marching orders, namely Trump.

I think he will do fine.

"Ok, his bona fides are that he grew up in the projects? This dude has no construction experience, he’s a hoity toity surgeon for God’s sake."

Here is an interesting take yldstrk.

At a recent meeting of like minded conservatives, the discussion of Detroit and or outreach came up. While a great idea, one discussion item was a pastor was told they are more apt to take advice / tutelage from those that live their. So the Pastor moved their.

Now Dr Carson can't live in Compton, Camden etc etc etc. However, with his background of actually growing up and succeeding from Detroit gives him an in if you will ( IMHO ) and any of his reforms, initiatives via HUD might not fall on deaf ears.

IMHO this is another example of Winning, and no I am not tired of it.

Also, did any of you see Mary Barra GM's CEO will be on Trumps team of Econ Advisers? put the GM debate aside, I know people that know her and the one term they use to define her management ( and yes it would an understanding of econ by extension ) is "Rock Star".

Again I am not tired of winning. Local Radio guy here in MI had a guest on this A.M. that noted in his econ adviser team meetings, Obama played with his phone and basically looked like he couldn't wait to get out of their.

Trump will listen to Barra and anyone else on that team.

“The 65-year-old has no previous policy experience in the field of urban development.”
But using bureaucrats has not worked out for us thus far. This is the administration of real change and optimism. Time to think outside of the political box. Carson brings heart and wisdom.

Typically, construction done through HUD is through a Public Housing Authority (local org) not the Feds.

HUD’s most famous/infamous programs have more to do with Fair Housing claims and residential mortgages.

A few of HUD Program Offices are:

Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships
Community Planning and Development
Equal Employment Opportunity
Fair Housing/Equal Opportunity
Ginnie Mae
Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control
Housing
Policy Development and Research
Public and Indian Housing

I don’t think construction or being a developer is a prerequisite. And, IMO, this is better than Surgeon General, which IMO, is really a nothing job.

I think it’s a good fit.
