How the heck did the Trump team pick this weasel as a presidential elector pledged to the GOP ticket? Was there no vetting at all?

Campaigns always pick a set of alternate electors that fill in when an elector dies, resigns or is declared ineligible; already, one of the Texas electors was replaced when he expressed that he could not vote for Trump and resigned as an elector. That POS Suprun should resign and let one of the alternate electors cast the vote for the presidential ticket to which he was pledged to cast, and if he doesn’t resign the campaign should find a way to disqualify him. I am a strong supporter of the Electoral College, and believe that electors should be allowed to cast votes for other persons if something extraordinary occurs (e.g., the candidate dies, or is discovered not to meet the constitutional qualifications for office), but it’s far too late for a Trump-Pence presidential elector to claim that he can’t vote for the ticket.

The root of the problem with this "loose cannon" Republican elector is that the Texas state Republican Party obviously didn't vet him thoroughly for reliability before it put him on the ballot as an elector.

I don't know what procedures they may have followed, but all electors have to be told that they have one simple job only, to vote on the appropriate day in the state capital for the party's candidates for president and vice president. It's an honorary position granted by the party organization. The electors have to know that they are rubber stamps, and creativity as an elector will not be tolerated.

If you want to mouth off on candidates and policies after the people of the state have spoken, you cannot be an elector, period. Run for some other position instead.

This is all actually very good for the system.

You will see, in state after state, renewed attention to elector laws/procedures, to state voting laws, to voter verification.

Trump’s election will be a blessing in so many ways.

Let’s see how these people enjoy having their background investigated every time they say something against Trump

Unemployed, bankrupt, married, with 3 kids, and PAYING for a web site to search for extramarital affairs.

Sounds like a Democrat.

Fine, but if you just left election procedure reform to the states, the 'rat-infested states will do absolutely nothing.

Although I'm generally not a supporter of federal intervention in what's generally a matter of state sovereignty, elections for federal office can be at least partially regulated by Congress. This issue of faithfulness of electors can be cleared up by constitutional amendment. But this distracts from the more pressing issue of masses of votes being cast by individuals who have no right to vote.

Aside from mandating voter photo ID in all states for federal elections, Congress could require all states to demand proof of citizenship of all voters, either a birth certificate or a naturalization document! And Congress can pass and the feds can enforce criminal penalties on aliens who even attempt to vote in a Federal election. Congress could also repeal or modify the Clinton-inspired Motor Voter Act.

He was on board until November 26. Very pro-Trump. Suddenly, he was blathering on about Russians hacking the system, and how there needed to be an investigation, blahblahblah.

Did they pay him off? Was he secretly a conspiracy kook all along? He seems fixated on the Russians/hacking, fake news story. He seemed to be smarter than to fall for such nonsense.

Why? What changed? IDK.

Do the campaigns make the choices? I would have figured the state parties did, independently, if that’s normally true it’s more likely to have happened this year. Either way, obvious lack of proper vetting. There was a guy from WV, I forgot if it was ‘00 or ‘04 but he didn’t wanna vote for Bush, in the end he did.

One (other) nut in Texas who was going off about “biblical” qualifications has done the right thing and quit.

Still no signs of other jerks, besides Supran.

Colorado Judge orders 2 Shillery electors who sued to vote for her. Thoughts?

Rep-elect Che-Porter in NH is an elector, I guess that’s allowed as she’s not *currently* in Congress but I don’t like it. She’ll be there while the votes are counted.

I thought that, in most states, the campaigns had input on who are selected as presidential electors in such state. In particular, I would think that the Trump campaign would be cognizant of the fact that persons selected by state parties may not be big fans of the Trump-Pence ticket and made sure that everyone selected, if not a Trump loyalist, at least was willing to cast his vote as pledged.

I think that the judge in Colorado should have ruled that the state had every right to punish electors that did not vote as they had pledged, but that the Constitution does not permit the state or anyone else to limit for whom a presidential elector may cast his vote (other than to prohibit an elector voting for both a Pres. and VP candidate from his home state). So if some Hillary elector from CO wants to vote for Kasich or whomever instead, that would be constitutional (and the vote could be counted by Congress, unless Congress somehow decided that it isn’t valid, which would break all precedent), but that the state could throw such elector in jail for breaking his oath to vote for Hillary.

Regarding Che-Porter being an elector, meh. It doesn’t matter whether she or some other Democrat is an elector from NH, Hillary will get those four EVs anyhow (although we’ll never know whether the usual Democrat cheating (particularly Democrats from Massachusetts and Vermont voting in NH) gave Hillary her narrow margin of victory in the state). And if the Framers wanted to prevent a Representative-elect from being an elector, they would have said so. Besides, if any votes need to be taken in the House regarding whether to accept a slate of electors or something, do you think that Che-Porter would be any less biased if she wasn’t an elector from NH?
