Amazing how Heroin comes out later than sooner in so many of these young deaths

Reportedly worth over 200 million pounds. There was some sense In there somewhere.

I enjoyed watching the freedom video last night. Versace had a fashion show with it where they walked out lipsynching

I always feel a mix of bad and anger at the ones who had talent but who gave into their demons.

Best lines in the article:

The Will Rogers Memorial Park in Beverly Hills is named after America's great cowboy humorist, famed for his catchphrase "I never met a man I didn't like". Apparently, most patrons of the park's toilet feel the same way.

Interesting article, covers many facets of his life. Steyn is a great writer, having a knack to seamlessly meld disparate topics into a story. He can be a bit verbose though.

Pop-culture wiseacres spent three decades maintaining Andrew Ridgeley as a byword for the pathetic also-ran. But, as Kathy Shaidle says, he's alive and George isn't. Andrew married Keren from Bananarama and has lived happily ever after, with great memories of youthful pop stardom and none of the pain that comes from trying to hang onto it. He's part of most of George Michael's good times, and none of the bad times.

...

Years ago, Artie Shaw, having outlived Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James et al, said to me, "My music was better than theirs, and my life turned out the best, too." It was an either/or deal for Wham!: George Michael won the former, and Andrew Ridgeley the latter. And perhaps, even knowing the final score, George would do it the same all over again.

No matter WHAT the subject is, Steyn never fails to produce JEWELS such as:

“Ten years later, with a minimalist beard and a permanent scowl, George Michael looked like a Bond villain whose plans for world domination hadn’t quite worked out.”

“And so the years of sulking, suing and striking for the right to be respected as a great artist were obliterated in an instant, by one ill-considered foot foray under the stall divider, and George was back to square one, waking up to headlines like ‘Zip Me Up Before You Go-Go’”.

“George Michael won the former, and Andrew Ridgeley the latter. And perhaps, even knowing the final score, George would do it the same all over again.”

Yep. Having lived through it with a drug addict husband, You really CANNOT change the base nature of ‘who’ someone is and rarely do they even WANT to change even with Death or Disease staring them in the face on a daily basis.

"Mark Steyn seems to think that if you've been arrested in a public toilet you have no credibility on foreign policy."

Priceless.

I usually like Steyn, but this article is pure pointless rambling!

I hate “Last Christmas” with a passion. Depressing as heck and little to do with celebrating Christmas but they play it every year on every store Christmas music track. If I am going to listen to Christmas music I want it to put me in a happier frame of mind, not depress me.

Running the other morning I was litening to a few of his tunes that I liked and was thinking, comparing his death and story to Bowies.

Bowies was a story of the excess that youth allows and buys. Then a story of maturity and redemption.

George Michael's was just the opposite. It was the unwillingness to let go of those excesses that youth allows and then a bitterness at life that those times have passed you by.

That's not easy for anyone. Especially people who, seemingly had so much of those door opening qualities--beauty, money, fame, etc.

It is so much easier and graceful to accept those days are over than and adjust one's life accordingly. The last ten years of his life, maybe even closer to 20, looked anything but pleasant.

Until his death was announced the other day, I had never heard of George Michael.

A lot of these people die of depression and addiction. A guy told me its stunning how fast a drug addict can go from an illness compared to an average person.

Steyn provides another knock-out obituary on a recently deceased celebrity - his collection of obits on the famous from Ronald Reagan to Rose Mary Woods - Passing Parade - is an intriguing and entertaining read....

Wasn’t into 80s music at all. The only LP I recall seriously liking (and buying) was Centerfield by John Fogerty.

After George Michael died I pulled up something of his on youtube and quickly recalled why I didn’t like it. Oh well.

Silver lining - turns out he donated millions of pounds to charities anonymously over the years. Despite my disagreement with his lifestyle and abuse I admire his trying to make the world better with no ego involved.
