It must not be forgotten that there were no civilians left in Japan by August 1945. In June 1945, the Emperor militarized the entire country by proclamation. Everyone became a combatant. Further, Hiroshima was a garrison city. It held the Headquarters of the Kwantung Army and was a center of military production. Hirohito’s wartime Japan was one where there was glory and eternity in death for the Emperor. The Bomb showed the Emperor what conventional warfare and bombing could not: there is only oblivion in death.
