It is important to those like McCain and Graham to get publicly smacked down, so they get no more followers. In the case of Graham, he's from South Carolina, and so it isn't electorally expedient for him to be such a nuisance. If he were from New Hampshire or Illinois, you might understand it. But South Carolina?
