Influential conservatives are pressing President-elect Donald Trump to nominate Bill Pryor, a judge feared and disdained by liberals but loved by conservatives because of his titanium spine, to the Supreme Court.
Pryor is said to be on Trumps short list to replace the legendary conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, who died almost a year ago.
Trump told reporters Wednesday that he will announce his nominee within two weeks of taking the oath of office on Jan. 20.
Conservatives want an intellectual heavyweight to fill Scalias shoes and fulfill Trumps promise made during last years campaign to nominate a justice in the mold of Scalia.
The person who would mostly likely be my top pick would be Bill Pryor, said John Malcolm, director of the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation, who has had several conversations with Trumps transition team. He described Pryor as an outstanding public servant who calls it like he sees it and wont bend to public pressure.
He has a titanium spine, he added.
Pryor, however, would spark strong resistance from Democrats, who repeatedly filibustered his nomination to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals a decade ago. The impasse was broken only after then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) threatened to change the rules to strip the minority of the power to filibuster judicial nominees.

Cruz does not know what natural born citizen means.
If you nominate judges too young, you may find they are not as conservative as you would like.
A wolf in sheep clothing. See John Roberts and his betrayal of conservative values.
I agree that maybe too young is a problem, but John Roberts was old the day he was confirmed. He was in his 50’s. Too old.
I agree it is sad. Republicans are stupid but have been for a long time. Like they say, “you can’t fix stupid”. We NEVER have been able to have a long term strategic plan. All they do is reactionary. We are LUCKY to be in charge. Most of them don’t deserve to be in charge that is for sure.
While I like Pryor, I’m not 100% sold on the guy:
Pryor would be excellent. So would Thomas R. Lee, Senator lee’s brother.
54 still gives us around 30 years, but I agree that a younger nominee would be preferable, all other things being equal.
Yes, that would be good for Ted — as long as Donald keeps his word and nominates originalists, which I expect he will do.
He has mentioned at least 21 of them.
And there have been a lot of terrible justices nominated by Republicans, as well.
I don’t expect Trump will pick someone of that ilk, but no matter how much we may want to support him, I would not support a Souter type. Not that I expect one.
You hve a severe case of CDS.
I want someone we can be proud to elevate to Chief Justice when Roberts retires.
That’s not good.
Only problem was we didn't know Souter was a Souter type until he got on the court. Some people surprise you.
No, I have respect for the Constitution and an appreciation of the brilliance of the founders.
Cruz likes to say he does too, but he put his ambition ahead of that.
It looks like your day isn’t complete until you’ve attacked Cruz again. It’s as if it’s the purpose for which you get up in the morning.
News flash: Campaign’s over. Trump won; Cruz didn’t. You can stop attacking him now.
And your statement that Cruz “put his ambitions ahead of” the Constitution is ludicrous on its face.
A lot of us did, and opposed him. I am proud to say I opposed O’Connor and Souter. And Roberts.
Young Americans for Freedom, back when it was a real organization before Ron Robinson neutered it, opposed Sandra Day O’Connor. We were right. The late Howard Phillips of the Conservative Caucus testified against Souter, and was blasted by other conservatives for opposing that nomination. Howard was right. Ann Coulter wrote a stinging column in opposition to Roberts. Ann was right.
Some of us knew.
First kill the filibuster for SCOTUS. Then it’s PARTY TIME!
That should be the primary qualifying factor for anyone President Trump nominates!
Cruz did an admirable job in the Sessions hearing.
He may redeem himself as a Senator.
He will never be a natural born citizen.
Low energy!
