Forcing yourself upon a dog you don’t know is asking for it. Some are good sports and play along. Some aren’t. Always approach an unfamiliar dog cautiously. Remember, they don’t know you, either. Extend your hand slowly, let them sniff it. Watch their body language. You’ll know whether or not they welcome your attention.

Yes, extend the back of your hand slowly with your fingers slightly curled under - you lose less digits that way. :)
