He was asked to stay on a few extra days, but said no. The General who is replacing him was put in position as his successor a year ago. So, I think this was planned.
He may have said that he would never leave his men 1/2 way thru a mission. That is where he went wrong. He should have not said anything. By saying this, he caused speculation that something was going on. As a professional and as a military general, he should have not remarked.
That is a very fair summary.

He has no problem with stress as defined by most.
