I don’t plan on ever having a self-driving car, but it is extremely unlikely that the brakes will have a catastrophic mechanical failure without one of the cars other computers picking up on the weakness. There are better hypotheticals than this one.
Agreed.
I had a tire blowout doing 85 on the Garden State. Those years of driving horrible cars for livery paid off and I got over three lanes to the shoulder.
I was wondering how a driver-less car would handle that, but I was told there are new tires that have a tire within a tire if you have a blowout.
Supposedly, you won't even have a car in the age of self-driving cars. People will simply summon a ride via an Uber-type app and get chauffeured by the self-driving car to where they are going; same for the return trip.
I frankly don't see it happening in our lifetimes. It's like those flying cars that are always shown in depictions of the future. They're a looooong way off IMO.
They will be optional at first but eventually we will not have a choice. I know this sound ludicrous but it will happen.
I have a problem with the hypothetical anyway. I mean, imagine the same scenario but a human is driving. No matter what choice he makes, is it better than the choice a self driving car (SDC) would make? And assuming the SDC can choose, would it not mean that some humans have, more carefully than a human driver making a snap decision, programmed in the best solution? Or not?
I agree with you but would add that this scenario seems to be designed to look for problems where none really exists. Like you said, this is absurdly rare and, therefore a red herring.
Saw this same situation on Bull a couple weeks ago.
First time I’d seen Michael Weatherly since 86-ing NCIS a few years ago after they’d axed or killed off the Israelis, turned Mindy’s husband into god, and gelded Tony and Tim.
And Bishop. What a loser.
End of rant.
You are driving by a park and a kid runs out in front of you chasing a ball. You cannot break in time to avoid hitting him. If you swerve right, you will hit a bunch of other kids in the park. If you swerve left, you will hit an oncoming car head on.
Which will your car choose?
If you like your car, you can keep your car.
You do know about many opponents of the Deep State who died in airplane crashes. Now imagine Deep State can target its opponents driving or riding in self-driving cars. And anyone who notices this publicly goes to the top of the list.
Even if you can’t picture this in the USA, imagine a Stalin or Pol Pot hiring experts to do this, where it is normal to not have many vocal opponents.
My thot too...
