'Fake news' complaints prompt YMCA to change the channel (CNN axed)
Chicago Tribune ^

Is the Valparaiso Family YMCA simply exercising its right to appease as many members as possible, or is the new Donald Trump-led America already flexing its muscles?

Last Friday night, the YMCA stopped airing CNN on its televisions in the facility's wellness and exercise area. Why would it do so after all these years of airing CNN and other national news channels? Complaints from some Y members about alleged "fake news" on CNN, I'm told.

"This did happen but, when we found out at the leadership level, it was changed back," explained Debra Koeppen, the YMCA's chief development officer.

Last weekend, I heard from Y members who were there when this took place. None of them agreed with the removal of CNN, or the removal of any specific TV news outlet in their workout facility. Members have always been free to choose which TV to exercise in front of, or which ones to listen to via their earbuds.

Ah, so “leadership” quashed the will of the people (for the children?).

Like the NAACP, it’s far past time for the YMCA to change the name of their organization, or shut down.

My YMCA has the programming of every channel on our local expanded basic cable channel on each bike, elliptical, treadmill etc.

Nearly every health club with professional equipment built in the past 10 years has this individual choice. The exception is spinning bikes which are designed to be movable/portable and never had a screen to begin with. Oh and if you’ve been in a spinning class between the instructor’s choice of music and their usually overbearing miked voice... you don’t need a screen/TV.

The local car dealer had CNN on the TV in the waiting area. Two customers got up to ask the channel be changed.

I happen to have a cell phone with universal TV remote control app so I quietly took care of the problem.

from the article: "The policy that the YMCA has just put out is a victory for those who complained," said Greg Quartucci of Valparaiso, who's been a Y member for more than 15 years. "CNN has been on a TV at the Y for those 15 years, and I am disappointed that the Y removed CNN because of complaints."

I thought about drawing the equivalence of so many towns, schools, and other organizations having to do away with a religious symbol or event, simply because some atheist complained. But, the irony would be wasted on peole like Quartucci.

Great start. Airport lounges, hotel lobbies and bars need to be next. Fifteen years ago, CNN could sort of claim to be the middle ground in between Fox and MSNBC, even though they never were. Now there’s not even a claim. Shut ‘em off!

Time to go after Airports...something's fishy about CNN on those screens. The fix is in and we need to take the fix OUT.

I was at the doctor today and switched the channel away from CNN. Lady asked the receptist to switch it back, which she did. As soon as she was back at her desk I switched it again. Nobody can tell you are doing it.
