Not guilty on every such charge because I reject the basic concept of the “hate crime”....The court tried to jail me because I hung the jury on a ‘hate’ charge about 13 years ago. I stuck by my guns and beliefs and an exasperated Federal court threatened and finally backed down. They got another jury and convicted.
Although I'm certainly not a lawyer I've done some research on the general subject of "jury nullification".What I learned was that a number of prominent jurists, including some of our Founders, have made it clear that juries have the absolute power to 1) judge the evidence presented to it 2) judge the appropriateness of the charges brought against the defendant (that is,was he/she "overcharged" for example) *and* 3) judge the appropriateness of the law under which the defendant was charged.
"Appropriateness" is my word...I'm sure there's a legal word/phrase that could be substitued.
