Zero Hedge

Shortly after Donald Trump made good on one of his core campaign promises on Monday morning by signing an executive order formally withdrawing the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade deal, Trump told labor union leaders that he would renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement "at the appropriate time."

The remarks came at the start of a meeting at the White House with leaders of construction, carpenters, plumbers and sheet metal unions, during which Trump pledged to stop trade deals that harmed American workers.

According to the White House, participants included North America's Building Trades Unions President Sean McGarvey, Laborers' International Union of North America President Terry O'Sullivan, SMART sheet metal workers' union President Joseph Sellers, United Brotherhood of Carpenters President Doug McCarron and Mark McManus, president of the United Association that represents plumbers, pipefitters, welders and others. The union meeting also included several local union officials and follows a gathering of 12 chief executives of large companies at the White House to discuss revitalizing the U.S. manufacturing economy.

“This is a group that I know well,” Trump said referring to the union bosses, adding “we’re going to put a lot of people back to work” and “stop the ridiculous trade deals.”

When Trump said the administration “just officially terminated TPP,” it prompted applause from the labor chiefs (and this time it certainly wasn't by paid members of the studio audience), who later described their meeting with Trump as "incredible."

Exactly. Unions are the piggy bank of the democratic machine. Trump just put that in play without compromising conservative principles and promoting America. He is a genius.

Absolutely. We are watching Trump’s glorious, single-handed knockout of the leftist dream in America - and abroad. Observe the greatest historical event of many lifetimes unfold.

They don’t seem to care, do they? They’re still crowing about their parades, oh I’m sorry their rallies over the weekend. While the president is busy speaking to union leaders about getting Americans back to work the left is busy marching in nothing parades and making fun of Kellyanne’s inaugural outfit. The majority of Americans will soon see which side is truly serious about fixing this country, and it sure ain’t the Democrats!

They lost the union members, the leaders are now acting like politicians always do. When you see the parade, get in front and act like you’re leading it.

The Democrats just lost their unions.

I just heard on the radio that the Democrats also support Trump's moves on these free trade deals. If Trump keeps this up, those crazies who protested against him during the inauguration and over the weekend may find themselves very isolated before long.

Let's admit it fellow Cruzers, the better man won.

How could trade deals impact building unions? As far as I know, China is not making buildings and shipping them here.

If manufacturing starts coming back new facilities will need to be built and employees need houses.

By 2020 I expect both Unions and a good chunk of the African American vote to be on Trump’s side while the dems embrace Pedophiles and beastly.

Rank and file will vote Trump, still pay the dues but the Union bosses don’t get to tell them how to vote. In time, Unions will be forced to flip political parties.

A lot of Union Members are social conservatives. If the Democrats lose
this demographic they are going to have a very difficult time replacing it.

Dumbocrats must be swilling valium and vodka as we type.

Private unions are fine with me, if people want them- voluntary.

Government unions are not. I don’t expect Trump to ‘make nice’ to them.

Trump feels strongly about our deteriorating airports and bridges too
And then there are those pipeline and other energy projects ..
And of course - the wall
Which I always predicted would be built with union labor
Making it suicidal for democrats to obstruct
