That describes my mom as well, but I wasn’t there yet to see it. Just old photos. She had curly hair though, so no flip, more of an Annette Funicello sort of deal. She called those pants “clamdiggers.”

Very old woman.

Though Dick Van Dyke is older.

Last time I saw her she wasn’t looking great.

Did she play Ellen’s mother in the sitcom?

From YouTubeRed:

“Love Is All Around” was written and performed by Sonny Curtis for the Mary Tyler Moore Show which aired from 1970-1977.

The show’s protagonist was the first never-married independent career woman as the central character. As Mary Richards, a single woman in her thirties, Mary Tyler Moore presented a character different from other single TV women of the time. She was not widowed or divorced or seeking a man to support her...and the show’s theme song is a reflection of that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBgRjpJmXcM

The theme song, “Love Is All Around”, was written and performed by Sonny Curtis...although often mistakenly attributed to Paul Williams.

The lyrics are words of encouragement directed to the main character. In those words are references to the end of a previous relationship and making a fresh start...beginning with “Your are most likely to succeed”.

Keep in mind this is still an era where women were still finding their way in our country...including displaying their sexuality. This is why we hear the lines...”All the men around adore you...that sexy look will do wonders for you”.

Hmmm...a foreshadow of times to come perhaps where (some) women would use their God-given beauty to climb the corporate ladder.

The song’s primary theme is found in the repeating lines of...”You can have the town, why don’t you take it” as well as “You’re gonna make it after all”. A sign of the changing times in America...a sign that women were no longer gonna merely be resigned to secondary roles (to men) in the corporate world.

Sonny Curtis’ song is a reflection of that belief. And the show that the song introduced did just the same. The Mary Tyler Moore Show has been cited as one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced in US television history.

It received high praise from critics, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row (1975—77) and continued to be honored long after the final episode aired in 1977.

Moore’s iconic hat toss took place at the corner of 7th Street and Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis...where the scene was filmed for the opening credits.

But Ed Asner has made guest appearances on The Middle, starring Patricia Heaton, who is a Conservative.

I like spunky women. Mary’s probably one of the reasons why.

When I lived in Michigan one of the local Detroit radio morning shows played a game called “Canadian or Dead”.

Later on TV?

MTM was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1970 after losing a pregnancy at seven months. She turned 80 (hard to believe) the end of last month.

To have lived as long as she has with all of her medical issues is an accomplishment in itself.

IIRC, she married a heart surgeon, Dr Robert Levine, around 25 years ago. I worked with the doctor who was the best man. He said she was a real doll. It sounded like she was really happy with her last husband, which I am sure Dr Levine will be. Prayers for her comfort.

Will she make it after all?

In answer to the last question, no, she wasn’t Ellen’s mother in the sitcom. I don’t remember who played the mother, but it wasn’t MTM.

This is very sad for me, because I am a big fan of hers. In fact, I recently ordered the series of “The Mary Tyler Moore show” on DVD.

Dick Van Dyke said in an interview not long ago, that she was pretty much a recluse, refusing to see anyone, except maybe her husband.

It’s also been widely reported that she’s now blind and just wants to go be with her only son, who accidentally shot himself at of the 24.

I don’t know if anyone here remembers that Mary Tyler Moore was much more conservative in her personal life than the characters she played as she herself has stated.

To the horror of her liberal friends, she told Bill O’Reilly in an interview that she was a “libertarian” and would have voted for John McCain. (It was reported at the time that her very liberal costar, Ed Asner, was not too happy to discover this about her.)

Anyway, she has been in my prayers of late and I pray that the Lord will draw her to Himself and give her life eternal.

Really loved the show once in reruns. Followed the 10 PM local news, and then end always meant bedtime to face another stressful day. How I hated for those thirty minutes to be up

I thought the episode were Ted learned to play poker was the funniest one, altho Chuckles The Clown is considered a sitcom classic

I was a young, single working girl when the Mary Tyler Moore show was running, and I was looking for an apartment. I wanted one just like her first one in the show. Never could find one in my price range even close to that one.

That fact of her son’s suicide may be the reason why I haven’t seen Mary T. Moore really smile in decades. She had a naturally big and beautiful smile. That inner mirth has not been seen by me since the Carter Administration.

I recall Mary being onstage about 10 years ago standing next to the older Dick Van Dyck. Dick was his usual jovial hyperactive self, while Mary was stiff, expressionless and perfunctory. A striking contrast.
Add to that, her severe diabetes, I’m surprised she has lasted even this long. So different than the actress who played ‘Rhoda’. That actress held a big press conference last spring, saying she was dying of cancer. That cancer has now gone into remission.
Some folks are content to experience their lives more privately than others. Two different, very talented women.

Her son did not commit suicide, he accidentally shot himself in the head while cleaning his gun.
